The Tire Rack SCCA Solo Tour Ready To Blast Off in Houston

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 1, 2004) -- The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Tour touches down this weekend in the home of National Aeronautic Space Administration's "Mission Control" as Gulf Greyhound Park hosts the fourth round of the Tour in Houston.

Starting Saturday morning, almost 220 competitors will don their helmets and rocket through two separate courses, vying for top honors of the SCCA Houston Region event.

Quite a few stars are dusted in among the award hopefuls who will pilot their cars this weekend. Erik Strelnieks, of Austin, Texas, will be there in his Jungle Cat Racing/Soul Speed 2004 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Joining him in Super Stock competition will be Jerry Onks, of Smyrna, Tenn., in his Eckler's/VetteSport/RAFT 2002 Corvette.

Mark Sipe, of Montgomery, Ala., will test his Koni/Hoosier/Kodiak Wheels 2003 BMW Z4 and his driving talents against an impressive 18-entry, B-Stock field which includes James Yom, of Palatine, Ill., in his www.VTEC.net 2000 Honda S2000.

In G Stock, the Charleston/MINIUSA.com 2003 Mini Cooper S driven by Mark Chiles, of Rocky Mount, N.C., is ready to launch after Chiles was handed his first class defeat of the season, finishing third, in The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries in Topeka, Kan., last weekend.

Other top guns expected to be on hand include Beth McClure-Strelnieks, of Austin, Texas, who will compete in a competitor's dream field in Street Modified 2, which includes both 2003 D Prepared Ladies National Champion Paula Whitney, of Sherwood, Ark., and 2003 B Stock National Championship third-place finisher Ian Stewart, of Tallahassee, Fla.

Engines will fire first thing Saturday morning with the first of five heats due on course at 9 a.m. (CST). Sunday begins at 8 a.m. with an awards ceremony scheduled to follow at approximately 4:30 p.m..
