Crunch Time:
Drivers Try to Rebound From Slow Start at The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo in Farmington

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 6, 2004) -- For the first time ever, drivers competing in The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo NationalSeries will test their skills at McGee Park in Farmington, N.M., this weekend.

The year will be half-over with the completion of this event and some soloists who expected to compete for national championships in the fall are unexpectedly still looking for their first class wins going into the new venue.

That said, some of those individuals still searching for a victory are seemingly on the verge of busting out in a big way this weekend after several solid performances in a row.

One of those looking for a big weekend is Super Stock competitor Erik Strelnieks, of Austin, Texas, who is coming off his second consecutive runner-up finish in the class in his Jungle Cat Racing/Soul Speed 2004 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Getting his first win of the season won't be easy, however, as last round's SS winner, John Ames, of Colorado Springs, Colo., is entered and looking for back-to-back wins in his Ames Tech Consulting 2004 Corvette Z06.

Out of A Stock, Jason Isley, of Chino Hills, Calif., is off to a bit slower start than he might have anticipated coming into this season. After finishing second in AS at The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo National Championships last September, Isley, in his sccaforums.com 1989 Corvette, has just one top-three finish (third at Topeka) in three events this year. As is the case for Strelnieks in SS, Isley will have to beat out A Stock's most recent winner, Round Four top-man Jason Uyeda, of Simi Valley, Calif., along with a host of others in order to break his winless streak.

Paul Brown, of Los Alamos, N.M., finally gets a chance to run against his own class, E Stock, this weekend after having been bumped into C Stock the previous two events. The switch didn't seem to faze Brown too much, though, as he finished second in those events after finishing first in E Stock at San Bernardino in his Isotope Wheels/Automotive Pros 1993 Toyota MR2.

Someone who hasn't struggled to find wins in 2004 is H Stock driver Mark Chiles, who continues his home-away-from-home tour of the western United States. Chiles, of Rocky Mount, N.C., hasn't had the opportunity to run a ProSolo event east of the Mississippi River since Atlanta in February, but continues to assault the competition in his Charleston/MiniUSA.com 2003 Mini Cooper S. He has finished first three times this season with his only non-win of the year being a third-place finish in G Stock at Topeka.

Tom Berry, of Alta Loma, Calif., could make a case as one of the hottest drivers currently as he heads into the weekend coming off not only a class win in B Street Prepared, but also as the Hawk Performance Super Challenge winner as well. Couple those accomplishments with another first-place earned in his Kumho/Ankeny Racing Enterprise 1996 Corvette at San Bernardino, and it becomes no wonder that the 2003 BSP National Champion is right where he is.

Jennifer Isley, of Chino Hills, Calif., is looking for a big weekend in Ladies 1. Isley, in her Kumho Motorsports 1989 Corvette, is the reigning A Stock Ladies National Champion, but hasn't been able to get it going as of yet, earning just one podium finish (a second-place showing in Round Two) in 2004. With names like Katie Elder, of Folsom, Calif., Kyung Wootton, of Austin, Texas, and Michelle Wyant-Seeling, of Edmond, Okla., floating through the L1 entry list, Isley will have to be nearly perfect to earn her first class victory of year.

Cars are scheduled to begin the weekend at 9 a.m. at McGee Park. Day Two begins at 8:30 a.m. with the Hawk Performance Super Challenge set to start at 1 p.m., approximately.
