MEGENBIER CLOSES IN ON VW JETTA TDI CUP TITLE WITH PODIUM FINISHES IN NEW JERSEY
Championship leader set a new series mark with his seventh and eighth top-three finish of the season

MILLVILLE, N.J. (September 16, 2009) -- Timmy Megenbier set a new Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup record over the weekend (September 12-13), with a pair of podium finishes in Rounds Eight and Nine at New Jersey Motorsports Park. In finishing third in both races of the doubleheader, the rising American talent not only set a new single-season mark for top-three finishes with eight, but also took another step towards the 2009 series title. Megenbier enters the season-finale in two weeks at Road Atlanta with a large 39-point lead in the title fight.

Day one of the doubleheader event in New Jersey featured less than ideal conditions for Megenbier and the rest of the Jetta TDI cup drivers, with rain falling throughout practice and qualifying. The championship leader proved however he was up to the challenge, turning the second fastest time in morning practice, before qualifying fifth for race one in his No. 17 Chicagoland VW.com/Caputo/Wiscon/Rahal Foods Volkswagen Jetta TDI.

A dry track greeted the drivers for the start of Round Eight on Saturday morning, and Megenbier immediately showed he was not content to just sit back and score points. The former karting star quickly advanced from fifth on the grid, into a place among the lead trio. Battling for position from corner to corner, the order routinely altered, with all of the lead pack in contention for the win. When the checkered flag waved, Megenbier was just 0.894s back, crossing the stripe in third place.

The final day of action in New Jersey once again witnessed Megenbier lining up fifth in the 24-car field. The Melrose Park, Ill., driver, in a repeat of race one, was again a driver on the move early on, working his way into the top-three. While a full-course caution period briefly halted the racing, it was not long before the leaders were back battling for the win. As expected, the second half of the 16-lap affair featured plenty of dicing for position, with Megenbier yet again in contention for the win. The 18 year-old, having set the fastest lap of the race, completed a successful weekend with a second straight third place result, giving him eight podium finishes in nine races -- a new series record. More importantly Megenbier added to his championship advantage, exiting the doubleheader with a 39-point lead.

"I just need to finish ahead of Andy Lee to maintain my points lead," stated Megenbier. "We lost eight on Saturday, but we got them back on Sunday. Going forward into Atlanta it's all about winning the championship not just the race. If Andy wins I need to finish 15th or better."

The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup concludes on September 26-27, with Round 10 at Road Atlanta. Megenbier enters the season-finale at the famed Georgia road course requiring only a top-15 result to clinch the series title.
