MEGENBIER EXTENDS VW JETTA TDI CUP LEAD AT MOSPORT
Illinois driver scored his sixth podium finish of the season in Round Seven
BOWMANVILLE, ONT. (August 31, 2009) -- American Timmy Megenbier continued his pursuit of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup title on Sunday (August 30), with superb podium finish in Round Seven at Mosport International Raceway. The championship leader overcame slick conditions in Canada to finish second, extending his championship lead to 39 points.
Megenbier's lone visit to Canada commenced on Saturday morning via a practice session around the high-speed 2.549-mile road. In damp conditions, via overnight rain showers, the Melrose Park, Ill., driver focused getting acclimated to the track and determining the grip levels utilizing various racing lines. The end result was the nine fastest time for the talented young driver.
Returning to the cockpit of his No. 17 Chicagoland VW.com/Caputo Foods Volkswagen Jetta TDI a few hours later, Megenbier was among those challenging for top honors in the lone qualifying session. While Megenbier went nearly 10 seconds a lap quicker in the dry conditions, he was unable to get the lap he desired due to traffic. When the checkered flag waved, the 18 year-old had secured a row two starting position via the fourth fastest time.
When the race action got underway on Sunday morning, the VW Jetta TDI Cup drivers were once again greeted by less than ideal conditions via a wet track. For Megenbier the start did not go exactly as planned, losing multiple positions early on. The former karting standout however quickly recovered. Showing the speed and skill of a potential champion, Megenbier began turning the fastest laps of the race, advancing up the charts lap after lap. Despite being engaged in a highly-entertaining battle for second place throughout the closing stages of the 17-lap affair, Megenbier was able to close the gap to the race leader. In the end, Megenbier ran out of time, crossing the start/finish in second place, earning his sixth podium finish in seven races.
"When we arrived at the track I found that I had another different car," stated Megenbier. "This was the third car change for me this season. In practice it felt pretty good, except it was significantly down on power. My mechanics found a boost leak from one of the turbo hoses. After the fix the car was great. At the start of the race everybody was fighting for position. I just sat back and kept my tires cool as we were on rains and it was drying very quickly. I fell back to seventh, but I really wasn't worried. I knew I was faster then the drivers in front of me and they were using their tires up. Just past the half way mark I decided it was time to get back up to the front. I had a nice little battle with Andrew Cordero for a few laps, before setting out after Mark Pombo. In the end, we finished second, but Andy Lee and Joey Atterbury finished a few positions behind me, so we were able to add to our points lead. We achieved our goal for the weekend and made some great contacts. I'm now looking forward to New Jersey."
Megenbier returns to Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup action on September 12-13, with Rounds Eight and Nine at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Entering the doubleheader event, Megenbier leads the championship fight with 266 points, 39 ahead of second place.
