A brush fire broke out near mile 29 of the course prompting federal officials to halt the race for 40 minutes. Faster racers had cleared the area before the race was halted, those who didn't sat and waited for the fire to burn itself out. Four drivers who didn't wait were penalized at a hearing after the race. Fire fighters were on the scene with a helicopter, three fire trucks and four support vehicles. The U.S. Foresty Service was aided by Bureau of Land Management personnel and units of the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

Mark Gleckl, a veteran motorsports TV news producer, was killed when Walker Evans lost control of his truck and crashed through a spectator fence. Evans and Ivan Stewart were racing wheel to wheel as they approached the sweeping right hand turn before the finish line. Two eyewitnesses reported seeing Evans' truck touch the back of Stewart's as he tried to overtake the Toyota. This sent Evans' truck into a series of uncontrollable hops. Evans' truck crashed through the spectator barrier hitting Gleckl and throwing him 100 feet. Gleckl was critically injured and was immediately taken to Barstow Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

During the Trophy Truck race on Friday, IndyCar driver Robby Gordon lead comfortably at the ten lap mark. Gordon pitted on lap 11 to replace rear shocks. He also had fuel feed problems. His twenty minute pit stop (the same amount of time it takes for one lap) spoiled any hopes of victory.
