FOR SOME, MEXICO'S BAJA 1000 IS A FAMILY AFFAIR
Four fast families among Team CENTRIX entries
CENTENNIAL, CO -- NOVEMBER 15, 2005 -- On November 18 at Mexico's Baja Peninsula, among the 16 entries registered for the CENTRIX Financial Wide Open Baja Challenge at the SCORE Tecate Baja 1000 will be at least four families who consider competition a family value.
For the second time, Robert Sutton, chairman and chief executive officer of CENTRIX Financial, and 2002 and 2003 winner of the Baja Challenge class, his son David, and daughter Kate are entered on different teams. Kate Sutton, who raced on the first all-woman team at Baja in 2003 is founder and president of Birdie women's golf apparel. Kate and her dad are the only father-daughter tandem scheduled to compete in this year's desert classic. David, a University of Colorado senior and seasoned Baja driver, will be focused on bringing home a win for his team.
"Racing is a passion of mine," said Robert Sutton. "But it's not the only thing -- my main focus has always been my family. Fortunately we all love to race. The fact that we get to race against other families only makes this event more special to me."
Last year, racing with acting legend Paul Newman, Sutton's vision of a three-peat was knocked off by another Team CENTRIX family -- Mexico's own Jourdain family. Michel Jourdain Jr., a former Champ Car driver and NASCAR's newest open-wheel convert, will be sharing the driver's seat with his father, Michel Jourdain Sr., who competed in the Mexico City Champ Car races in the 1980s. Also in the car with them will be Michel Sr.'s brother, Bernard Jourdain,q989 Indy 500 co-rookie of the year.
Another Team CENTRIX family that will be racing this year is the Servias of Spain. Oriol Servia, who finished second in Champ Car World Series this year, will be racing with his father, Salvadore Servia, himself a two-time Spanish Rally champion. Oriol's Newman/Haas Racing "brother", Sebastien Bourdais, the 2004 and 2005 Champ Car World Series Champion, will also be racing for Team CENTRIX.
The final racing clan from Team CENTRIX includes Rhys Millen, the Formula D drifting champion who is also known for his stunt driving in the recent hit movie Dukes of Hazzard. Racing against Rhys, will be his father, Rod Millen, world reknowned rally driver and Pikes Peak Hill Climb record holder. Finishing up for their family will be Rod's son Ryan, an emerging open-wheel driver.
This year, a record 359 entrants from 31 U.S. states and 12 countries will have 30 hours to complete the 709 mile Baja 1000 course through some of the region's roughest terrain, starting and finishing in Ensenada-Baja California, Mexico.
