Saturday night, Oct. 26, I had the pleasure of witnessing (along with a couple thousand other folks...) that most special of events in motorsport...a first career win. And one that may have signaled a changing of the guard in Sprint Car racing in the Southwest. Driving the #17 Bergman owned car, Jeremy Sherman of Phoenix, Az won the SCRA's 32nd event of the year at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, CA and won it in convincing fashion, passing a fired-up Ron Shuman for the lead on the 28th of 30 laps. Shuman, who has been looking "racy-er" in the last couple of events than he has all season, took the lead from the point after a couple of aborted re-starts. But it's not like he never looked back... If it wasn't Rodney Argo applying the pressure, it was Sherman tailing "The Flying Shu" for most of the race. Keeping him in sight and letting Ronny know he there, it may have been Jeremy's presence that caused point-leader to ever-so-slightly jump the cushion in the first turn. The Arizona Young Gun seized on the oppurtunity provided by his more experienced fellow Arizonian's lapse in concentration and rocketed into the lead with two laps remaining. The Winner's Circle celebration and following fan reception in the pits were joyous affairs with hugs, handshakes, and seemingly endless supply of autograph hunting kids to keep the new winner busy. But not so busy that, while leaving the track for the night I witnessed what could only be described as the perfect "1-800-Collect" commercial...Jeremy at a payphone calling home with the news.
