Adria, Italy. Frederic Vervisch made his debut in Superleage Formula this weekend. Despite having to discover a new car and a new track, the FC Liverpool driver managed to get through to the "Super Final". The Belgian proved that he is capable of competing at the highest level. He preceeded renowned drivers such as ex- F1 driver Doornbos and his own teamleader and championship leader, Yelmer Buurman.

Vervisch had to deal with a lot of challenges : pitstops, a powerful 750 bhp car, using the push-to-pass system, besides driving on a track that he had yet to discover. "Corners are following in quick succesion, so there is really no time to relax", Vervisch stated. "It is really physical and I never ran such long races." In free practice however, he put a 7th fastest and a 4th fastest laptime on the timing sheets. In qualifying he managed to reach the quarter finals. "An honest but difficult system", says Vervisch. "You only get this one lap to put down your qualifying lap. I made a small mistake but was happy with 7th place on the grid."

In the races the Atech-Reid driver managed to come home in 7th position in race 1 and got a 5th placing in race 2. The rookie driver surprised many onlookers by pulling off some amazing overtaking, for instance on Doornbos.

Vervisch : "I had to learn how to use the push-to-pass and adjust my braking because of the extra 50 bhp. I was gaining confidence in the car and I was quicker than Doornbos so when I could outbrake him in the first corner I just took my chances."

The steady performance got the Belgian driver into the Superfinal but an electronics problem lost him a lot of time. The gearbox kept going into neutral.

Frederic Vervisch: "I have had a briljant weekend. I really have to thank the Atech-Reid team for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I finally got to prove myself in a high level competition. I received an exclusive offer from the team, that would like to see me in their car for the next races. All will depend on the willingness of sponsors to relaunch my career at the highest level."
