Chris van der Drift wins in Superleague Formula Race 2 at Assen
ASSEN, May 16 2010 -- Kiwi driver Chris van der Drift has taken a win in the second race of the Superleague Formula by Sonangol during the championships second race weekend of the 2011 season. At the TT Circuit Assen, the New Zealander got off to a great start and with a lightning quick pit stop by the Olympiacos team all van der Drift had to do was bring the 750hp car to the finish line to secure his first victory.
Qualifying in sixth position for the first race the 24-year-old kiwi was in a great position for the opening race, and with an excellent start passed AC Milan to take fifth, but then quickly hit bad luck with a gearbox failure that forced the Olympiacos car out of the race. "Early on I found it difficult to change down gears and then finally they stopped all together and I was stuck in 4thgear", explained van der Drift "I could do nothing but retire."
The Superleague Formula format specifies that the grid for the second race is determined by the reverse results of the first race so luck was back on his side, the Olympiacos driver eventually ending up on the second row. Again off to a great start directly passing Atletico Madrid driver Maria de Villota, van der Drift then set off to hunt down Borja Garcia of Sporting Clube de Portugal. "I managed to catch Borja really quick because I was clearly faster, but I could not pass him and I didn't want to crash", said van der Drift. "Because I didn't have anyone too closely following me I decided to keep him just in front and to stay calm until the pit stops."
Thanks to excellent work by his team GU Racing, van der Drift came out after the pit stop in the lead "I thought I would be back in seventh or eighth on the track, but then I turned out to be the leader because many drivers like me chose to make a pit stop early", said van der Drift. Championship leader Craig Dolby from Tottenh am Hotspur was the only driver that came close to the Kiwi driver. "But he was no threat."
Van der Drift was satisfied with his performance at his European 'home' race weekend at Assen, "All in all I am very happy with my victory although I couldn't deliver a result in the first race! It was just a real pity I had problems with my gearbox. I look forward to Magny Cours, where the next race takes place this coming weekend".
After two race weekends Olympiacos driver Chris van der Drift lies in sixth place overall in the championship with 111 points, with only 9 points separating him from second place.
