FC Porto Takes First ever Beijing Street Circuit Pole Position
Alvaro Parente (FC Porto) today made history by becoming the first driver to take pole position at the Beijing street circuit. The semi permanent track is designed around the roads surrounding the 2008 Beijing Olympic Rowing Park, and is very fast and very tight, creating a great spectacle both in and out of the car.
It was a game of strategy in qualifying today as most drivers tried to take advantage of a clear circuit. There were two separate red flag incidents that caused a disruption in qualifying strategies throughout the paddock as Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan), Federic Vervisch (Liverpool FC) and last weekend's 100,000 Euro race winner Earl Bamber (PSV Eindhoven) fell victim to the lost time in group A and as a result will start race one at the rear of the grid.
The second qualifying group was far more successful for the Atech Reid team as both Tristan Gommendy and Alvaro Parente made it through to the knock out rounds respectively. Alvaro went on through the sessions to take on and beat Robert Doornbos (Corinthians) as well as Craig Dolby (Tottenham Hotspur). After missing the last round in Ordos, Parente will be the one to beat and will start race one on grid one.
