UNION, KY - Danny Smith made it two in a row Saturday night at Florence Speedway in All Star sprint 30-lap feature action. From the pole Smith pushed Guy Webb's Eagle through heavy lapped traffic and held off a hard charge from new points leader Kenny Jacobs to pocket $5,000 in wire-to-wire fashion.
With the top six in time trials inverted for the start, Smith had Phil Gressman alongside. With Smith on top when the green flew, Gressman trailed in second with sixth starter Jacobs motoring along in third. By lap five Smith had amassed a half-straightaway lead over Gressman in the Miller Rigging Machine. Jacobs began applying the pressure to Gressman, and after two laps of being side by side, Jacobs took over the runner-up position. After starting seventh, Dean Jacobs was now up to fourth and challenging Gressman in John Baker's No. 34 Maxim. D. Jacobs and Gressman ran side by side for a lap until Dean pushed into third behind Smith and his brother Kenny.
Dean was on the move and began challenging his brother for second. Lap 11 saw Dean run side by side with Kenny and the pair touched coming off turn four, with Dean taking over the second position. With Smith expertly navigating lapped traffic, Dean was able to close only slightly, still having to fight off his brother's charge and Gressman's advances. At the half way mark, Dean drifted wide, allowing Kenny to regain second on the backstretch. At this point, Smith was a half straight ahead, and Kenny began chipping away at the lead as Smith began to get slowed by lapped traffic.
Lap 19 saw the only caution of the event as Dean's good run ended with a flat tire. Rodney Duncan also stopped with a flat, and both were able to make changes and join the tail of the pack, with the order Smith, a pair of lapped cars, Kenny Jacobs, Gressman, Jeff Shepard and Kelly Kinser. Smith pulled out to another big lead, but once he entered lapped traffic again, Kenny reeled him in quickly, setting up for a pass for the lead. On lap 28, a pair of lapped cars were ahead of the leaders. Smith was running high and Jacobs dove low to make a pass, but he could not clear the lapped cars and remained second. Lap 29 saw Smith pull out to a two length advantage, and that's how they finished.
After executing another 360 spin and popping a wheelie in victory lane, Smith stated, "We've been trying all year to get Guy Webb his first win, and now we've got two in a row. I'm just grateful for starting up front. I heard Kenny behind me, but I've got to thank the lapped guys for letting me get past them tonight," Smith concluded.
"I couldn't get to him," runner-up Jacobs said of his late race charge toward the front. "I couldn't get a clear race track. Too many lapped cars, I just couldn't get around them."
"We just held our own tonight," Gressman said of third. "We'll take third, we're gaining on it. If we keep working as a team we'll get a win here soon," he concluded, speaking of his new Miller Rigging team.
Shepard was home fourth and Chad Kemenah came home fifth, ahead of Greg Wilson, Byron Reed, up from 17th starting spot, Kinser, Duncan and Rob Chaney
The Crown Battery heat fell to Dean Jacobs, the B&B Products heat went to Byron Reed and the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Tom Busch and Jeff Shepard captured the Haulmark Dash. Kenny Jacobs' fast time of 13.873 seconds was a new track record, snapping the previous mark of Rocky Hodges.
