KNOXVILLE, IOWA (JUNE 26, 2003) - The name of the event may be different but many familiar faces will be vying for the top spot in the Pella Corporation Classic at the Knoxville Raceway, August 1-2. Six sanctioning organizations will be sending their top stars and winged 410-cubic-inch sprint cars to the famed half-mile oval for the third annual event, formerly known as the Pella Corporation 1200-Pound Nationals. Sanctioning this year's world-class shoot-out are the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC), Interstate Racing Association (IRA), National Championship Racing Association (NCRA), National Motorsports Racing Association (NMRA), the Golden State Challenge (GSC) Series and the host Knoxville Raceway.
"With six sanctioning bodies backing the action-packed event, the Pella Corporation Classic will attract some of the top talent in racing today to Knoxville Raceway," said Kathy Krafka Harkema, Pella's corporate public relations specialist. "This is truly one exciting event that race fans as well as race teams from across the country really look forward to as a highlight of the season and the summer."
This year's Pella Corporation Classic field is expected to be not only the largest ever in its proud history, but also the toughest ever. Knoxville standouts Terry McCarl (third in 2001), Don Droud, Jr. (champion in 2001, sixth in 2002), and Kerry Madsen (third in 2002) appear to be the brightest stars for Ralph Capitani's 'home team'. Knoxville point leader McCarl also leads the NMRA in points with four feature victories this season, and is that sanction's career leader in feature wins. McCarl has also picked up a NCRA and an All Star co-sanctioned feature victory this season.
Defending All Star point champion Chad Kemenah (fourth in 2001), who is the current ASCoC point leader and sits sixth in NCRA points, returns this year. Dean Jacobs, three-time NCRA feature winner this season, has enjoyed much success in this event in the past (second in 2002, fifth in 2001), and looks to build upon last year's runner-up finish. Jacobs currently sits atop the NCRA point leader board and is looking to spoil Shepard's repeat bid for the rich race win. Jacobs has also won twice on the All Star circuit and now commands second place in All Star point standings.
Another top five finisher from last year, Jason Johnson (fifth in 2002), sits in third in the All Star point standings with two All Star feature victories on the season. Defending NCRA champion Brooke Tatnell of Australia is also expected to contend for this year's honors. Another top driver to look out for is eleven-time Golden State Challenge champion and current point leader Brent Kaeding, who has one Challenge feature win this year. Also look for former Knoxville regular turned GSC star Dennis Moore, Jr., who has three Challenge feature wins to his credit, and Tim Kaeding, five Challenge feature victories this season, to make hard runs at the championship. Current IRA point leader Kim Mock, veteran Joe Roe, and Travis Whitney will look to make some noise on the August 1-2 weekend as well. Both Mock and Whitney notched top ten finishes at Knoxville earlier this season and all three drivers have an IRA feature victory under their belts this season.
"Pella Corporation team members and race fans can expect thrilling nights of action during Knoxville Raceway's prestigious Pella Corporation Classic," Capitani said.
In addition to watching the action, lucky race fans may even win a chance to ride in the pace truck during the Pella Corporation Classic. "Fans aged 18 or more can simply stop by the Pella booth outside the track ticket office near the main entrance to the grandstands before racing begins to register for a chance to lead the pack on the track, riding in the pace truck during nightly action," Krafka Harkema said. Other fans may be lucky winners of the myriad of prizes provided nightly by Pella Corporation, a world leader in continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
Founded in 1925, Pella Corporation has long been recognized in the window and door industry for its technology and innovation, having been awarded more than 100 U.S. product and design patents. In addition to windows and patio doors, the company also manufactures storm door and entry door systems with the same level of quality and technology for which Pella is known worldwide. Headquartered in Pella, Iowa, the company is represented by select building materials retailers and a Direct Sales Network operating Pella Window & Door StoresSM nationwide.
