ALLSTAR: Lincoln Speedway All Star Results 1999-08-28

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/28/99 - Mont Alto’s Lance Dewease passed 1999 Lincoln Speedway Track Champion Fred Rahmer in heavy lapped traffic on the 37th lap and raced to the $5,000 win in the 40-lap All Star Circuit of Champions "A" main at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night for his 12th overall win in 1999.

Dewease started eighth, moved into second place behind Rahmer on the 20th lap, and stalked the newly-crowned track champion over the next several laps, and used the heavy lapped traffic to his advantage in recording his 12th overall win in 1999 - and his 12th career All Star win as well.

"He got hung up there in lapped cars and couldn’t get by them," Dewease said of his winning pass, "I was fortunate to sail by him on the top and get by him right away and not get held up. A lot of times the guy sitting in second place has an advantage when you come into lapped cars, especially with cars racing side-by-side in front of Fred. He didn’t know where to go, and I was fortunate to get by him."

"I tell you what, the last couple races have had heck of a good finishes," Dewease exclaimed, "Grandview the other night was a heck of a race and tonight...what can I say. During Speedweek here Fred (Rahmer) handed us the win because he was definitely the fastest car. I told my guys all day when we knew where we were starting that we’d have to be good the last 20 (laps) because I knew we’d have to catch fast Freddie."

It looked like another Rahmer romp when the Manheim Auto Auction/Cindy Rowe Auto Glass #77 slipped under polesitter and race-long leader Cris Eash exiting the second turn of the ninth lap. For Eash, it was the beginning of the end. He tapped wheels with Dewease and spun backwards while racing for second on the frontstretch of the 20th lap. After going to the rear, he ended up facing the sky in a four-car pileup on turns three and four of the 23rd lap. After replacing a top wing and making other quick repairs, he rejoined the field again and raced to a ninth-place finish.

Following the 20th-lap restart for Eash, Dewease kept pace with Rahmer for the next ten laps. He turned it up a notch following a 28-lap caution for Steve Siegel, who spun while battling Paul McMahan for fifth place in turns one and two. Siegel was able to rejoin the field and finished tenth. Dewease closed onto Rahmer’s back bumper as the leaders raced through lapped traffic with seven to go. The race-winning pass came on the fourth turn as Rahmer got bottled up behind two lapped cars.

Dewease’s final margin of victory was 1.10 seconds over Rahmer, with Jeff Shepard crossing third, Greg Hodnett fourth, and Danny Jones completing the top five after returning from the pits to replace a flat left front tire on lap 23. Rounding out the top ten were Jesse Wentz, top finishing All-Stars McMahan and Jimmy Carr, Eash, and Siegel.

The win was also Dewease’s second of the year and 10th of his career at Lincoln.

Rahmer won the United Expressline Heat, Carr (of Maple Ridge, British Columbia) won the Southwest Expressline Heat, Kenny Jacobs of Holmesville, OH, won the Southwest Glass Heat and Wentz won the United Specialties Heat.

Siegel won the United Expressline B-Main, while Rahmer won the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash and set a new 4-lap track record of 55.75 seconds in the process.

Joey Saldana of Brownsburg, IN, set fast time in time trials over the 43-car field with a one-lap time of 13.398 seconds.

Spring Grove’s Mike Zeigler raced to his third win of the season in the 15-lap thundercar feature. He started ninth and took the lead when Corey Knaub dropped off the pace while leading on turn four of lap seven. His toughest challenge while climbing through the field was from son Mike Zeigler, Jr., who raced him side-by-side for laps two through five. Zeigler, Jr. hung on for a fifth-place finish. K.T. Shaw crossed second, with Jerry Bingaman and points leader Bobby Beard finishing second through fourth.

Heats for the 36 thundercars on hand were won by Zeigler Jr., Bobby Beard, Shaw and Knaub. Twin consolations were won by Duane Watson and Sean Herrick.
