O'Reilly ASCoT Revved Up for Virginia Double

TULSA, Okla. (May 22, 2006) -- Yes Virginia, there are Sprint Cars. And they're invading the State of Virginia this coming weekend in perhaps the biggest Sprint Car double in state history in the form of the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour.

Round ten for the ASCS National Tour unfolds on Friday night atop the lightning-fast, high-banked, 0x00bd-mile Wythe Raceway clay oval in Wytheville, VA.J Following the Wytheville invasion, the chase for the $50,000 series championship moves across the state to Bill Sawyer's semi-banked, 0x00bd-mile Virginia Motor Speedway clay oval in Saluda on Saturday night.

The ASCS National Tour contingent will be joined by the Heintz Performance ASCS Southern Tour for both nights of action.J Two-time and defending series champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, leads a strong contingent of ASCS National championship contenders into the weekend. Despite being shut out of ASCS National victory lane thus far in 2006, Wright still sits atop the point charts.

However, Wright's lead is a slim one, as he travels to Virginia with a narrow one-point lead over Rookie of the Year contender Nick Smith of Broken Arrow, OK. Smith scored his first career ASCS National Tour feature win in the series' most recent outing at Poplar Bluff (MO) Speedway on April 28.

Hailing from Forney, TX, 2003 series champion Travis Rilat enters the weekend ranked third in points, just 32 points off the lead pace. Talala, Oklahoma's Zach Chappell is currently fourth, with Warsaw, MO, Rookie of the Year contender Jesse Hockett rounding out the current top five.

The balance of the current top ten includes 2005 National runner-up Darren Stewart (Bixby, OK), Jason Johnson (Eunice, LA), Jerrod Hull (Sikeston, MO), Tim Montgomery (Fredericktown, MO) and Sean McClelland (Collinsville, OK).

Other National Tour contenders expected for the weekend include Jan Howard (Byhalia, MS), Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (Sunnyvale, TX), 14-year-old Trey Robb (Newcastle, OK), Dustin Daggett (Portland, MI), Tony Bruce, Jr. (Liberal, KS) and Abe Sherwood (Tulsa, OK).

The ASCS Southern Tour features a tight points race as well, with Newersey's Scott McClaren tied with North Carolinians Johnny Bridges and Butch Pendergrass for the early point lead.

Friday's action at Wythe Raceway fires off at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's card at Virginia Motor Speedway going green at 7:00 p.m.

Wythe Raceway is southwest of Wytheville, VA, on I-81 to Exit 60, then 0.1 mile north on frontage road, then 1.5 miles east. For more information, contact the track at 276-223-9804 or on race day at 276-686-4261.

Virginia Motor Speedway is located nine miles north of Saluda, VA, on US 17. For more information, contact the track at 804-758-1867.

In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing at nearly 100 tracks throughout 27 different states and Canada in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
