The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprints return to the legendary Salem Speedway in Salem IN this Saturday July 12. This will be the third time the AVSS stars and cars have competed on the highbanked .555 mile oval.

The race in 2000 was cancelled because of rain. The 2001 event saw Mike Ling of Mt Brydges ONT. Taking the first ever AVSS feature at this great facility. In 2002 it was track record holder Kevin Feeney of Oxford MI taking the honors in winning the fastest race ever in AVSS history.

The track record holder Feeney in the Jim and Nancy Hanks owned machine broke the track record that he set in 2001 when last September he qualified at an amazing time of 14.499! This is an average speed of over 137.7 miles per hour. The incredibly fast oval is perfect for the countries fastest asphalt short track cars.

The field is expected to be nearly 30 strong with the drivers all trying to lower that track record and be the third different AVSS racer to capture the honors at this historic facility. Among the entrants are current AVSS point leader Tom Fedewa of Leslie MI who has five feature wins in the first ten AVSS events. The driver of the Katz Well Drilling machine is also the 2002 car owners champion and would love to add a Salem win to his resume. The Hoosier state will be well represented with second place point man Kevin Newton of Terre Haute IN trying to pick up his fourth Hamilton Trucking fast time award this Saturday. The rest of the top ten in points will all be competing as the AVSS starts the second half of the 2003 chase for the championship. The rest of the top ten in points include Jason Blonde of Litchfield MI who has two AVSS wins this season, Jeff Bloom of Bangor MI who finished second at Salem last year, Feeney the 2002 winner, three-time AVSS national champion Gary Fedewa of Holt MI and current rookie point leader Brian Lay of Millbury OH who has two AVSS wins this year already.

The eighth place point man is Ryan Katz from Battle Creek MI, Curt Shumaker of Ortonville MI and Johnboy Hotchkiss of Potterville MI complete the current top ten to compete. Also expected are 2002 drivers champion Tim Cox of Park City IL, two-time AVSS champion Bill Tyler of Parma MI, legendary Indiana racer Hank Lower of Angola and 2002 AVSS rookie of the year Jimmy McCune of Sylvania OH.

A complete program of AVSS qualifying, three to four heat races, a 12 lap B- main and a 30-lap feature are scheduled for this Saturday.

The AVSS cars are 1600-pound chassis with 410 cubic inch motors that are putting out over 800 horsepower. The top wing of five feet by five gives the car its tremendous downforce and the great Hoosier tire that the cars are running this year gives it its incredible traction. The cars run on racing alcohol and will attempt to lower the track record again this year. There have been four new track records in the first ten races of the 2003 season.

The official website of the AVSS is www.supersprints.com for more information. The place to be this Saturday is in the stands at the fastest track on the AVSS calendar Salem Speedway!

Times for Salem are as follows pits open at 1, hot laps at 3:30, Qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 7. The pit age rule is 14 with a parents waiver form signed. The track phone number is 812-883-6504.
