86 Drivers Eligible For Kele World Challenge, with 2 Qualifiers Remaining
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (February 20, 2004) - A record eighty-six (86) drivers are currently eligible for the Kele World Challenge (KWC), presented by the Wirtgen Group, to be held on Friday, August 13, at the Knoxville Raceway. However, two additional sprint car qualifiers remain at the Springs Speedway in Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday, February 28, and at Knoxville on Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1. Qualifiers have already taken place at the Parramatta City Raceway (Sydney, New South Wales) and the Premier Speedway (Warrnambool, Victoria) in Australia, and Todd & Pollack Speedway at the Bay Park Stadium in Mount Manganui, New Zealand.
Amongst the eligible drivers are ten Americans, including veterans Daryn Pittman, Brent Antill, Joey Saldana, defending Kele World Challenge champion Travis Rilat, and P.J. Chesson. Eligible Challenge rookies in 2004 will be Paul McMahan, Erin Crocker, Jayme Barnes, Shane Stewart and Billy Alley. Canadian Jimmy Carter is also eligible, as are fifteen (15) New Zealanders including KWC veterans Kerry Jones and Stevie Walsh. Amongst the sixty (60) eligible Aussies are inaugural Kele World Challenge champion Max Dumesny, four-time runner-up Brooke Tatnell, and fellow KWC veterans Garry Brazier, Troy Little, Trevor Green, Kerry Madsen, Marty Perovich and Lynton Jeffrey.
The next qualifier will take place at the Springs Speedway in the Western Springs suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday, February 28. The event will be the Springs 50-lap Classic, featuring Americans Travis Rilat, Ricky Logan and defending Knoxville track champion Terry McCarl, and Australians Max Dumesny (Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic winner) and Robbie Farr (Australian Sprintcar Title winner). Bill Buckley and Dave Stewart promote the world-class venue, which will also host plenty of talented New Zealanders like Alan Wakeling and Corey Haigh.
The final qualifier will take place on Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1, at the host Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. The Spring Classic, sponsored by both American Compressed Steel and Bud, will be a qualifier for Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders. Ralph Capitani is the racing director at the half-mile Marion County Fairgrounds track, which will host the $10,000-to-win Kele World Challenge, presented by the Wirtgen Group, on August 13.
