Jason Barney Becomes Latest First time ESS Winner with Victory at Edelweiss.
CANTLEY, QC -- In what has turned into the most competitive season in Empire Super Sprints (ESS) history, it was Constantia, N.Y.'s Jason Barney turn to grace victory lane Friday night at the Autodrome Edelweiss Speedway. By winning the Spectro Oils Canadian Invasion Series event the sprint rookie becomes the sixth first time winner on the nativepoker.com/ESS trail and also the 13th different victor in 19 events.
Barney is a the latest driver to come from the dirt modified ranks and has shown that he will become a driver to be reckon with at any sprint event with numerous top tens already under his belt. While the Jeff Walton owned #87 was fast all night, the pass for the lead did cause a bit of a stir and changed the outcome of the event.
On a lap 13 restart, Barney slipped under Billy White, who has led since lap four, contact was made and White's sprinter turned sideways coming off turn two bringing out the yellow. "I did touch him (White), I feel bad, real bad. I know I'm new to ESS and I just want everyone to know that I don't race that way or try to win that way." Said Barney who's celebration was tamed some by his own terms. "I had such a good car down low and had a good run, I knew it was going to be close in clearing him but I did just get into him. All the teams here treat you with respect and race clean, I just want everyone to know that we do the same."
At the drop of Danny Mulligan's green flag, White's teammate Russ Bennett shot off from his pole starting spot to lead up until White blasted by to become the new leader on lap four. When the caution came out just after the pass, there was a friendly "one finger salute" from Bennett to White. "I guess he doesn't follow team orders." said Bennett with a big laugh in the pits after.
While White was running a quick pace out front, Barney's charge from his eighth place starting spot was noteworthy also. Into fifth on lap two, fourth on lap three, third lap five and runner-up with a pass on Bennett with 11 laps in the books. The lap 13 caution bunched the field and gave Barney a chance to make his move. When the green came out, the pass was made after the contact, which did cause the final caution of the event.
The final 12 laps were run under green with Barney going through lapped traffic in the late stages with no troubles to win the event easily. "I can't believe we actually got a win on our first year with ESS. My goal was to just qualify for every show and maybe get some top 10's." said the quiet spoken victor. "We decided to run the rest of the season to get to see the tracks that I haven't been to so we can be better prepared for next year. Our goal is to run the tour and hopefully have a good year. We are still a race-to-race budgeted team but our plan is to give it our best next year and see what we can do."
At the finish it was Barney in for career win #1, Bennett came home with a fine second place finish just ahead of Jeff Cook who put pressure and actually passed the Spectro Oils #65 several times before Bennett got second back at the finish. Alain Bergeron's Comfrage Daniel Lampron backed #8B took another top five finish with a solid fourth place finish. The end result has Bergeron now second in the overall points and also leading the Canadian Invasion Series points. Doug Emery is making his title charge as well with a fifth place finish. Rounding out the top ten were Steve Poirier, who came from his 19th place starting spot, Jeff VanDusen, point leader Dan Kaszubinski, who came back from a lap one spin, Lance Yonge, who earned the Lane's Yamaha Hard Charger Bonus by coming from his 23rd starting spot, with Luke Eriksen in for tenth.
Six cautions, all minor in nature, slowed the pace on the fast, multi-grooved oval. Kaszubinski's spin on lap one, Doug Norrie slipped off the track on lap two, Mike Stelter looped his sprinter on lap four with Matt Norrie doing the same on lap five. Justin Barger was running was running fourth when his sprinter spun on lap 13 with White's incident on the restart the final yellow.
Taking the Car Mate Trailers heat events were Barger, White and Nick Fratto who also won the Gauvreau Top Soil/Walt's Hobby Dash event. The KSE Racing Products B-Main was won by Poirier.
ESS/EDELWEISS NOTES: A total of 26 sprinters played host to an absolute packed house--Making his first ever sprint start was Canadian modified star Brian McDonald who hopes to run much of the ESS tour in 2007--Rick Wilson and Lance Yonge came together in the B-Main with Wilson flipped his sprint. Yonge had to be an added starter to get into the A-Main starting field--It marked the first time since 1993 that ESS has visited Edelweiss twice on one season and both events were a huge success.
