Mike Woodring & Lance Yonge lead "alternative" ESS Team to Brodix ToC.

KNOXVILLE, IOWA (JULY 9, 2002) - Empire Super Sprints (ESS) point leader Mike Woodring of Eden, New York, will lead "Team ESS" at Knoxville Raceway's Brodix Tournament of Champions (ToC) on Sunday, August 4. In addition to Woodring, the other eight members of Dick Carbery's 'alternative team' are runner-up Lance Yonge of New York, Canadian Ryan Coniam of Ontario, Rob Dietrick of New York, Erin Crocker of Massachusetts, Jimmy Kouba of Minnesota, Brett Golik of Iowa, Tracy Nichols of Missouri, and Mitchell Moore of Kansas.

Woodring has a .154 winning percentage with ESS so far this season, having won twice in Canada at Granby, Que., and Thorold, Ont., aboard his own W.N.Y. Door Distributors-Upstate Kenworth-Got Milk Jereco-powered Maxim sprinter. Yonge has also earned two ESS wins at Busti, N.Y., and Malta, N.Y., in Mal Lane's Yamaha-sponsored Gaerte/Maxim car. Coniam has a pair of wins at Hammett, Pa., and LaFargeville, N.Y., in his own VSM Quality Coated Abrasives-sponsored sprinter, powered by Jimmy D's.

According to Knoxville director of racing Ralph 'Cappy' Capitani, "I can't think of a more diverse ToC team than that of the Empire Super Sprints. Especially when you consider that they have two perennial 360 powerhouses in Woodring and Yonge, a rising Canadian star in Coniam, a female college student (RPI) in Crocker, and a young winner in Dietrick, who'll be wrenched by former Knoxville racer Jeff Haines. It's very disappointing that more ESS regulars aren't willing to take this ToC challenge, but it'll be fun giving alternates Jimmy Kouba, Tracy Nichols, Mitchell Moore and our own Brett Golik a chance to compete for the big Brodix purse and the accompanying national attention!"

ESS will compete in the $4,000-to-win Brodix Tournament of Champions on equal footing with the American Sprint Car Series (ESS), Knoxville's own hard chargers, United Racing Club (URC) and the "Best of the Midwest" team, consisting of the 'top dogs' from the Nebraska Sprint Car Association (NSCA), WISSOTA Promoters Association and the Winged Outlaw Warriors (WOW). Each of the five groups will have six cars in the 30-car ToC. The top three finishers in the ESS heat will advance, with two more coming from their B-Main. The top ESS point-getter, as of July 8th, that did not transfer from the heat or 'B' will then receive the ESS ToC provisional and tag the 30-lap A-Main. All forty-eight invited teams will compete under one common set of technical rules, which include use of the Brodix ASCS spec head.

General admission tickets for the Sunday-before-the-Nationals race are just ten dollars apiece. Those seeking more information on the Brodix Tournament of Champions are urged to call Knoxville Raceway at 641-842-5431, or consult their web-site at www.knoxvilleraceway.com.
