July 15th, St. Augustine, FL - On a night marred by the tragic incidnet involving Shaun Farr on the last lap of the TBARA Winged Sprint race, Chris Manucy won the second annual Alpha Communications Hobby Bowl at Florida Speed Park, beating out rival Jody Stratton to claim the $1,000 winning purse. Rookie Glenn Nedrow posted his second third place finish of the season in the 50 lap event. Results were finalized Sunday afternoon following a post-race tech inspection delayed by the sprint car accident.
Wayne Reutimann was victorious for the second consecutive time at the speedway in the 30 lap TBARA winged sprint feature event.
Farr remains in critical but stable condition at Shands Jacksonville Hospital following a crash in Turn 1 in which the driver impacted the wall and catch fence, injuring several spectators and virtually destroying both the car and a large section of fence. Farr, 17 years old, who was traveling at speeds close to 130 miles per hour at the time of impact, suffered a closed head injury in the incident.
Of the six spectators who were injured, two were treated and released at the scene and four were treated at nearby Flagler Hospital and released shortly afterwards with mostly minor injuries.
Late Model, Sportsman and Yamaha Kart events scheduled for later in the program were cancelled.
From Louis Smith, Flrida speed Park:
"For the efforts and professionalism of our Fire & Safety Rescue team Saturday night in the way they handled the entire incident, both with the driver and those fans injured by the wreck, I cannot thank them enough.
"Also, I have to thank all of the track officials, who acted calmly and quickly in a chaotic and crisis situation, for their assistance to the medical staff and fans.
"Most of all, though, I want to let everyone in attendance know, especially those in the Turn 1 area, how absolutely magnificent you all were during this. Nobody panicked, people helped staff quickly identify those injured, and everyone worked wonderfully in helping additional medical teams and personnel get to the scene. Strangers became family in an instant. Racing can bring out the worst, but more often the best, in everyone..
"Florida Speed Park may not have the most fans in this sport, but after Saturday night, it is obvious that we have the very best.
"Shaun Farr, who will turn 18 on July 25th, remains in critical but stable condition at Shands Jacksonville Hospital, suffering from a closed head injury. I will keep you updated on his condition as it progresses.
"I've never been so proud to be at the helm of this speedway as I feel today. I wish the circumstances were different, and I am very thankful that the injuries to the spectators were mostly minor, considering what could have happened had the catch fence not have acted in the manner it was designed. I'm proud to be a part of this family. I pray for a full recovery for Farr, so that he may visit this family again soon.
"Thank you everyone, and I look forward to seeing you all at the races.
