Brian Brown & David Hesmer lead 10-car "home team" in Knoxville ToC
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (JULY 9, 2002) - Knoxville Raceway point leader Brian Brown of Higginsville, Missouri, will lead the 'home team' at the Brodix Tournament of Champions (ToC) on Sunday, August 4, on the Marion County Fairgrounds. In addition to Brown, the other nine members of Ralph Capitani's 'hard chargers', in order, are runner-up David Hesmer, Jesse Giannetto, Doug Wilson, Clint Garner, Joe Beaver, Mike Houseman, Ryan Anderson, Josh Higday, and Ryan Menninga. The entry of Brett Golik, eleventh in points at Knoxville, will be kept as an alternate in case it's needed. All drivers are Iowans except Brown and Wilson of Missouri, and Garner of South Dakota.
Brown has a .143 winning percentage so far this season at Knoxville, having won once on May 25 aboard his uncle Danny Lasoski's American Compressed Steel-sponsored Kistler-powered Eagle sprinter. Hesmer, the all-time 360 c.i. sprint car feature winner in Knoxville history, also has one win in 2002 in his Action Auto Racing Parker/Eagle car. Giannetto, who was injured again last weekend at Huset's Speedway, has one win in his dad's McLeodUSA-backed Salina-powered Maxim sprinter.
According to Knoxville director of racing Ralph 'Cappy' Capitani, "I feel like Knoxville's ToC team is very well balanced, as no one driver has more than one win yet this season. All top-ten drivers in the point standings are solid racers, so our fully-inverted heat race might be the best of the bunch. Of course, the drivers might not feel that way as it's going to be tough for them to get into the thirty-lap Brodix ToC main that night!"
Knoxville will compete in the $4,000-to-win Brodix Tournament of Champions on equal footing with the American Sprint Car Series (ESS), Empire Super Sprints (ESS), United Racing Club (URC) and the "Best of the Midwest" team, consisting of the 'top guns' from the Nebraska Sprint Car Association (NSCA), WISSOTA Promoters Association and the Winged Outlaw Warriors (WOW). Each of the five groups will have six cars in the 30-car ToC. The top three finishers in the Knoxville heat will advance, with two more coming from their B-Main. The top Knoxville point-getter, as of July 8th, that did not transfer from the heat nor 'B' will then receive the ToC provisional and tag the 30-lap A-Main. All forty-eight invited teams will compete under one common set of technical rules, which include use of the Brodix ASCS spec head.
The Brodix Tournament of Champions is race number three of the nine-race Southern Iowa SprintWeek, which will crown the inaugural "Mr. Sprint Car." It is expected that most ToC invitees will also compete in the previous night's regular 360 show at Knoxville. Those seeking more information on the Brodix Tournament of Champions are urged to call Knoxville Raceway at 641-842-5431, or consult their web-site at www.knoxvilleraceway.com.
