Bloomington Will Challenge Burthay In KISS Series
Wedding Bells On Schedule
May 18, 2004 -- Last Saturday, Michael Burthay became the first driver to start the King of Indiana Sprint Car Series with consecutive victories. However the third event, Friday night at Bloomington Speedway's quarter-mile oval, will present a bigger challenge for the young Kokomo hot shoe. For the first time this season, Burthay will unload for a KISS race with a disadvantage, has simply has less experience at Bloomington than many of his competitors.
Burthay will likely lineup against four-time Bloomington sprint car champion Derek Scheffel as well as Kevin Briscoe, who has more than 15 years of experience at Bloomington, two championships and currently leads Bloomington's points. Eric Shively scored a feature race victory at Bloomington earlier this year, but rode out a nasty tumble at Lincoln Park Speedway last weekend. The racers chasing Burthay in the KISS points, Matt Westfall, defending champion Jon Stanbrough, Kent Christian and Jason Robbins, all have more laps at Bloomington and will tighten their belts a little more for the KISS race. With the exception of Robbins, all have won KISS previous events.
While the racing lineup will provide a dramatic KISS, a romantic kiss will begin the evening, as Melissa Lake and James Burris will tie their wedding knot along Bloomington's front straightaway. It promises to be an unforgettable night.
Large car counts and a draw starting system, rather than qualifying, highlight The King of Indiana Sprint Car Series. The feature will pay $2,500 to win and $250 to start. This year drama will be added as the top two finishers in each heat will re-draw for feature starting spots. The KISS series will award $1,000 to this year's point champion.
The third round of the King of Indiana Sprint Car Series will be Friday, May 21, at Bloomington Speedway, located just south of downtown Bloomington. The racing program will include UMP modifieds and super stocks with $500 added to the purses for those divisions, paying $550 to win. General admission is $15 and the pits are $25. The pit gate opens at 4:30, general admission at 5:30, with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. For additional information see the track's website: www.bloomingtonspeedway.com or phone (812) 824-7400.
