Red River Shootout This Weekend -- ASCS Lone Star & Sooner Regions Square Off!

TULSA, Okla. (May 4, 2009) -- The Red River Shootout lives on! Not on the gridiron this time though, where Oklahoma and Texas have squared off in a larger-than-life battle for more than a century.

This time, it's a pair of dirt tracks that teams from Oklahoma, Texas and beyond will battle it out on as the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region locks horns with the ASCS Lone Star Region for two nights of competition this weekend.

On Friday night, Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway hosts the opening leg of the ASCS Red River Shootout. Then on Saturday night, the Sooner and Lone Star forces migrate south of the border to Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX.

Both nights offer up a $2,000 winner's share, with $1,500 for the runner-up and $1,000 for third. All "A" Feature starters will earn at least $300 on both nights.

While bragging rights are on the line, both series are certain to see big shakeups in the championship point battles at this early stage of the season.

With just one event in the books, Norman, Oklahoma's Danny Wood is out to the early lead in ASCS Sooner Region points. South of the Red River, the inaugural pair of ASCS Lone Star events have been logged into the books and it's two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth out of the gates quickly with the early lead.

But, it's quite likely that both series will have new point leaders by the end of the weekend.

While Wood could take in Friday's action at State Fair Speedway, he's scheduled to be in Little Rock on Saturday. And Ramey is still questionable for this weekend's competition after suffering a broken leg in an April 25 Cowtown crash.

Ramey had topped the ASCS Lone Star Region at Cowtown on April 4 to snare the series early point lead over Brad Welborn and Matt Clevenger after Skip Wilson won the opener the night before at Waco's Heart O' Texas.

Fourth in ASCS Lone Star points is two-time and reigning ASCS Sooner Region champion Brian McClelland, who is one of several drivers set to contend for both the Sooner and Lone Star championships in 2009.

McClelland wasn't as fortunate in the Sooner opener, missing the cut for the feature that Wood won in front of Jamie Passmore and Dustin Morgan.

Friday's action at State Fair Speedway goes green at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's card at Devil's Bowl Speedway getting under way at 8:00 p.m.

Oklahoma City's semi-banked, 3/8-mile State Fair Speedway clay oval is located on the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds near the intersection of N.W. 10th and May Avenue. For more information, contact the track at 405-948-6796.

The 0x00bd-mile high-banked Devil's Bowl Speedway clay oval is located six miles east of Dallas' Loop I-635 on US 80, then three miles south on Lawson Road. For more information, contact the track at 972-222-2421.

The inaugural season of ASCS Lone Star Region competition will consist of 18 events at nine different tracks throughout North Texas along with Friday's lone venture north of the Red River to Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway.

The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region is slated for a dozen nights of racing action at six different tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri in 2009.

The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.
