Ward wallops O'Reilly ASCS at MMP
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (September 12, 2003) - Mike Ward fought off Tim Crawley to notch his first O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers feature triumph of the season by topping Friday night's 30-lap feature at Memphis Motorsports Park.
After winning the evening's fifth and final heat race for the 37-car field, Ward led the feature field to the green flag with Terry Gray alongside. Ward outgunned Gray for the early lead, with Zach Chappell racing into second on the opening round.
While Ward gradually established a straightaway advantage, Crawley worked his way into third by the fifth round, then slipped past Chappell for second on the sixth lap. Ward's advantage was erased after eleven rounds when the caution flew for Josh Baker's stalled mount.
Ward led the way on the restart with Crawley and Chappell in tow. While Chappell would slip back in the field following a quick 360-degree spin on the 19th round, Crawley battled past Ward at the flagstand to take command on the 20th round.
Ward returned the favor two rounds later and raced to the checkered flag aboard the Kele & Associates J&J, with Crawley, Gary Wright, Gray and current series point leader Travis Rilat rounding out the top five.
Marshall Skinner claimed sixth, with A.G. Rains, Dale Howard, Chappell and Darren Stewart completing the top ten.
Gray, Rains, Skinner, Crawley and Ward topped heat race action, with Tim Montgomery and Stewart winning the 12-lap B Mains.
