The Kouba family had quite a night when the MSS visited the Kopellah Speedway in St. Croix Falls, WI on Friday night. It was the oldest member of the clan, Joe Kouba, who defeated his younger brother, Jimmy, to take home the $1,000 top prize. This was Joe's first victory of the season, and he became the fourth different winner in four events on the MSS trail this season.
Joe Kouba started on the pole of the main event by virtue of his victory in the Donahue Sports Center Dash and his brother was right alongside on the front row. Starting behind Joe in the second row was his son, Joseph, as the Kouba's swept the top three spots in the dash. At the drop of the green, Tony Hargrave flipped his #18H in turn 1 and brought action to a stop. Hargrave was uninjured but finished for the evening.
On the complete restart, Joe burst out to a healthy lead, but Jimmy wasn't letting him out of his sight. Also joining the fray was the Donahue Sports #6 of Roger Rager. He had started from the 7th position, but quickly moved into the third position and began putting pressure on the brother's Kouba. At times, the three lead cars were nearly three wide as Joe was running the middle of the speedway, Jimmy running a little higher groove, and Rager was glued to the bottom. On lap 9, John Franzen spun while trying to avoid the spinning car of Allan Gilbertson, who recovered but went to the pit area with mechanical problems.
Joe Kouba regained the lead on the restart and again opened the lead on his brother and the veteran Rager. As the trio dashed through lapped traffic, Joe Kouba was able to hold off his competitors and cruise to the victory. Jimmy Kouba was second, Rager was third followed by Spike Lempelius and Kevin Frisbie, who took the green from 16th starting position and charged through the field for a strong finish. Heat race action saw Jimmy Kouba, Lempelius, and Gilbertson take victories. The evening saw 21 cars pull through the pit gate and was the largest field of the season for the MSS. Coming into the night's action, Kent Winters was the point leader but was not in action as he suffered a broken elbow last weekend and will be out for the next month. John Franzen is the new point leader for the Midwest Sprintcar Series and is followed by Tom Kamrath and Ehren Layton. Winters has slipped back to the fourth position.
The MSS now heads south to the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa for a Fourth of July Spectacular this Tuesday night. The pit gates at Cresco will open at 2 PM and racing action will begin at 5 PM.
