TINER CHECKS OUT FOR TWIN CITIES SPEEDWEEK VICTORY "Becomes the third different winner in three events"

Marysville , CA (June 30) . . . Randy Tiner became the third different Silver Legacy Speedweek ‘98 feature event winner in three races, with a dominating performance in Tuesday's NARC-Budweiser Shoot Out Series headliner at Twin Cities Raceway.

Tiner started the 30-lap contest on the pole and took no prisoners on his way to his fourth feature event victory of the season. His open wheel racing work of art was performed aboard the Eldorado Casino/North State Racing Tri-C powered sprint car owned and built by brother Rod Tiner.

Tiner and Speedweek point leader Brent Kaeding paced the stellar 22-car field into the first corner. However, it became obvious early that Tiner had no peer on the tight quarter-mile bullring.

The leader hit traffic for the first time five laps into the event and masterfully negotiated his way through slower cars. By the 10th lap, Tiner had established a two-car buffer and 10 car length advantage over Kaeding. By the 20th, it was five cars and a full straightaway.

A caution flag for a minor incident with only two miles remaining bunched up the field for one last sprint to the checkered. It served as only a technicality, as Tiner went on to notch his 22nd win of his Northern Auto Racing Club career. That moved him past NARC legend Jimmy Boyd into seventh place on the all-time list.

"I knew that if I got out front early, I could win this race," said the hearing impaired winner through a sign language interpreter. "If I was going to beat Brent, I had to turn everything up a notch."

Kaeding settled for second place in the Al's Roofing Supply/High Five Pizza Shaver-Maxim.

"Tiner ran at a pace that most drivers can only maintain for four or five laps," said Kaeding. "He ran it for 30 straight. Nobody was going to catch him, unless we got some help from traffic."

Randy Hannagan nailed down the show position in the THR ICORE Autosports Gaerte-Hurricane. Kaeding now leads Hannagan by a 301-274 point margin in the quest for the coveted Silver Legacy Speedweek title.

Jason Statler held off Greg DeCaires to post his best Speedweek finish in his D.F. Rios Construction/Hayward Lumber-backed Maxim. DeCaires rounded out the top five in the D.O. Fabrication JB.

The next five drivers at the pay window were semi-transfers Peter Murphy and Shane Scott, brothers' Bobby and Paul McMahan, and Todd Bammer.

Kaeding cut a 11.069 second path through the timing lights in qualifying to earn quick time honors. Thirty-seven cars made qualifying attempts.

Jason Lund held off Murphy to score top honors in the 12-lap semi.

     Kaeding, Graydon Cross, Johnny Rodriguez, and Gary Willey were heat
race winners.  Billy Wilburn, a tire changer on Rusty Wallace's NASCAR
team, flipped in his heat race.  He was unhurt.
