KNOXVILLE, IOWA (JANUARY 24, 2001) - Graeme Hose, director of racing at the Premier Speedway in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, has confirmed today that nine Americans have entered this weekend's The Standard-sponsored 29th Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic (GASC). The $20,000-to-win Classic is the longest- running and most prestigious international sprint car racing event overseas, and all of it's 63 competitiors will qualify for the $10,000-to-win Kele World Challenge Dash to be held on August 10 during the Amoco Ultimate Knoxville Nationals in Iowa. The nine Americans entered, which is an event record, are Fred Rahmer of Pennsylvania, 6-time GASC champion Danny Smith of Indiana, Donny Schatz of North Dakota, Chad Kemenah of Ohio, defending GASC champion Danny Lasoski of Missouri, Iowans Terry McCarl and Brent Antill, and Californians Tommy Tarlton and Jason Meyers.
According to Hose, "We are over-the-moon with the support from the Yanks this year. It is such a diverse group of competitors from both coasts of the U.S. and everywhere in between, that it'll be fun to watch them battle our own troops like Brooke Tatnell, Max Dumesny, Skip Jackson, Peter Murphy, Kerry Madsen, Robert Farr, Trevor Green and others. The Saturday night Australia/America World Cup race and the Sunday night Classic, both sponsored by The Warrnambool Standard newspaper, should be fantastic races! I hope more of the Aussies are able to recriprocate and compete in this year's Kele World Challenge Dash in Knoxville. Ralph Capitani at Knoxville and Roger Johnson of Kele have gone from strength-to-strength with their efforts, and we in Warrnambool truly appreciate the two-track relationship!"
The purse for the 16-lap fully-inverted Kele World Challenge Dash in Knoxville is as follows: $10,000, $5,000, $4,000, $3,000, $2,500, $2,000, $1,500, $1,000, $900, $800, $700, $600, $500, $500, $500, $500. Those drivers that have already qualified at Chico, Calif., and Mechanicsburg, Penna., are Australians Robert Farr, Dennis Farr, Peter Murphy, Skip Jackson and Brooke Tatnell, and Canadians Jimmy Carr and Rick Wilson. Willie Kay's Western Springs Speedway in Auckland, New Zealand, will host the final Kele World Challenge Dash international qualifier on Saturday, February 10.
