Williamson, NY - Doug Norrie of West Suffield, CT, has won the series point race in the 2000 Dow Corning/Kaman Industrial Technologies CVRA Mini Sprint Challenge Cup, presented by HSBC. It wasn't easy, as twenty-nine drivers from all over the Northeast competed in the rain-shortened series for over $7000 in purse and series points money, and several contingency prizes. The series was organized by Branich Motorsports, Williamson, NY, and CVRA promoter Bruce Richards, and sanctioned by Central New York Mini Sprints, Inc. The series opener was scheduled at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Fair Haven, VT, on Memorial Day weekend, but rainy weather forced postponement. The skies cleared for the "new" opener, held in June at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, in Malta, NY. The Challenge Cup feature was sponsored by Carriage Traders, South Glens Falls, NY. Mike Emhof of Sodus, NY, lead a full field of mini sprinters to take the winner's purse. In addition, Emhof took home contingency product awards from Dow Corning (Midland, Michigan) and from Farrell Oil (Wilton, NY), and a gift certificate from Seymour Enterprises (Malboro, MA). Peter Sindt (Stone Ridge, NY) won the Speedway Advertising (Hookset, NH) front runner cash bonus for leading the most laps. Norrie and Tom Richard (Tolland, CT) took home cash bonuses for the top finishing 750 cc machines. Rookie Cory Sparks (Scotia, NY) was the race "Hard Charger," sponsored by Weld Wheels, finishing 10th after starting the race from the 20th position. Drivers returned to Albany-Saratoga later in the summer for the series finale. This time, Don Harvey, of Milford, NY, was the best of the starting field of 25 cars, taking the feature win. In addition to the winner's purse, Harvey took home the cash bonus from Speedway Advertising for leading the most laps. The Farrell Oil contingency package was given to Dennis Fink (Germantown, NY), and the Seymour Enterprises gift certificate went to modified hotshoe J.R. Heffner (Averill Park, NY) who took a mini sprint ride for the evening. The Weld Wheels Hard Charger Award went to Ryan Lund (Burlington Flats, NY). When the series points were tallied, Norrie was on top, and the top five positions were separated by only 8 points. Sindt was runner-up, Emhof third, P.J. Peworchik (Binghamton, NY) fourth, and Sparks fifth. Norrie and the rest of the drivers will be recognized for their accomplishments at the Central New York Mini Sprint banquet to be held early in November in Schenectady, NY.
