The "hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour" points race again has a new leader as three time champion Shawna Wilskey of Lake Stevens, WA regained the top spot after winning both of last weekend's outings.
The race to the championship of the Northwest's fastest 360 sprint car group continues to be extremely tight with only 15 points between 1st and 3rd positions. Wilskey leads at 513 points followed by Jayme Barnes at 502 points and Roger Crockett sitting at 498 points.
As the hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour travels to Willamette Speedway in Lebanon. OR on Friday, June 29th and Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford, OR on Saturday the 30th, the top three will be challenged by several drivers capable of taking a feature event win and moving to the top three.
Drivers from Washington, Oregon, California, Montana and Canada are all capable of pulling off a feature event win and the possibility of winning 105 points in an evening of racing can easily scramble the existing standings.
Jason Solwold, Barry Martinez, Jay Harkness, Richie Peterson, Jeremy Cooper, Rick Fauver and Scott Aumen fill out the top ten and are all major threats every race for a podium finish.
Fauver wowed the crowd last Saturday night at Portland Speedway when he raced from 20th to 4th in the fast paced non-stop 30 lap event on the half mile track and Martinez, Solwold and Barnes all have wins this season.
Although not racing for the championship this year, Dale Smith has a win at Riverside Speedway and is always tough at Willamette Speedway. Fans can expect Smith to be joined by his brother Marvin and fellow Oregonians Jeff Thompson, Scott Adams, Kevin Journey and Melissa Yates to be in the thick of the battle also.
Since this weekend is closer to his home, Ft. Jones, CA driver Dan Menne is expected to be a threat also. Although not racing the full schedule, Menne is always a top runner and has tasted the NST winners circle in the past.
Willamette Speedway's narrow three-tenth mile clay oval, site of Barry Martinez' win last month, is always a challenging and exciting venue for the racers, giving the fans some great fast paced action to follow.
Medford's Southern Oregon Speedway will be tested for the first time this year by the hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour and the third mile semi-banked oval has always provided fast racing and great action.
Following this weekend's racing, the hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour will return to action with the 2001 version of Northwest Speedweek running from July 16th through the 21st. Drivers and crews will face their toughest challenge of the season as they run six races in six days at five different tracks.
Action will start at Southern Oregon Speedway and conclude with the two day Evergreen State Sprint Challenge at Grays Harbor Raceway Park. In between, they will make stops at Willamette Speedway, Portland Speedway and State Fair Raceway.
For further information on this weekend's tracks, contact: Wilammette Speedway 541-258-8503. Southern Oregon Speedway 541-772-6264.
