Meyers looks for change in success at Kings Speedway
HANFORD, Calif. -- Home tracks aren't always the kindest tracks to drivers.
Case in point: National Sprint Tour driver Jason Meyers and Kings Speedway in Hanford.
Meyers and the 14 other NST regulars race at the 3/8-mile track Tuesday night, Sept. 5. The track was recently reopened, and Meyers' Elite Racing Team has subleased the track from Frank Dias Jr. and Scott Woodhouse to handle Tuesday's race.
"It's nice to see the track back open again," the 27-year-old Meyers said of the track that had been closed for about a year. "I know a lot of fans in the area are excited to see it open again. I grew up racing go-carts, micro midgets and Sprint cars here since the age of 8.
"This is pretty much where I started racing," added the Clovis, Calif. native.
So with all of those races at the track, just how much success has Meyers had at Hanford?
"I've only won here twice," Meyers said. "I've raced here a million times, but only have the two wins. I won the 1993 national Micro Midget title here, and in 2003 I won my first Sprint car race here."
Is this a case of a driver liking a track, but not necessarily the other way around?
"Exactly," Meyers said with a laugh.
In the past, Meyers has competed in other big California races this time of the year, including the Gold Cup in Chico. Since that event and last weekend's Harvest Classic at Calistoga have been announced as part of the World of Outlaw schedule for next year, the Elite team and others are not competing at those events this year.
As such, Tuesday marks a rare chance for Meyers and the Elite team to race at home.
"For us, it's a chance to get in front of our fans and sponsors here in California," Meyers said. "With Gold Cup and the Harvest Classic being Outlaw events, this is our only chance to be in front of those fans and sponsors. The track looks real nice. I'm looking forward to the race."
Meyers is excited to race at Hanford not just because of the local connection. He's also hoping a trip home can help his team regain the form that saw Meyers knocking on the door of victory lane until late.
"Hopefully this is just what we need to get back on track," said Meyers, who is looking for his second NST win.
Meyers isn't the only California native looking for success in the Golden State on Tuesday. Other NST regulars from California are Paul McMahan, 2006 'King of California' Jonathan Allard, and Tim Kaeding, a 13-time winner this season. Kaeding won the most recent NST race, Aug. 29 in Cottage Grove, Ore.
The California natives will take on fellow NST regulars Steve Kinser, points leader Danny Lasoski, Jason Solwold, Jason Sides, Shane Stewart, Brian Paulus, Dean Jacobs, Kerry Madsen, Chad Hillier, Travis Rilat and Stevie Smith. In addition, expect several prominent other California drivers to be on hand.
Reserved tickets for the Sept. 5 Kings Speedway show can be purchased by calling 1-800-801-ELITE.
Main grandstand seats are $40, while bleacher seats are $35. Family passes are $120 for two adults and two children.
On Tuesday, ticket booths open at 3 p.m. Front gates open at 5, with qualifying scheduled for 6:30 and racing at 7:15.
Kings Speedway is located at 801 S. 10th Ave, south of Highway 198 at the Hanford Fairgrounds.
