NST returns to Las Cruces for make-up date

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- The third race of the inaugural National Sprint Tour season took place at Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces.

On Oct. 7, the third from the last race of the inaugural NST season also takes place at the 5/16-mile track in Las Cruces.

"It makes both special events," said Holly Jones, general manager of Southern New Mexico Speedway. "We definitely want the NST to keep coming back. We want them here."

Originally, the Las Cruces races were supposed to be a March 10-11 doubleheader. Heavy wind on March 11, however, forced the postponement of that night's event to next Saturday, Oct. 7.

"We're very excited to have the NST back at our track," Jones said. "It brings a good crowd out. We look forward to having a big event. We had a great crowd for the Friday show."

Jones is hoping there will be a great crowd this time -- and better weather as well.

"Right now we have beautiful weather," she said. "It should be good. It might be a little chilly, but it should be good."

Tickets already purchased for the March 11 date will be honored Oct. 7. Tickets for the race are $35, with children under the age of 8 admitted for free. For information, call the track at 800-658-9650.

Tim Kaeding won the March 10 NST race at Southern New Mexico Speedway, his first of a series-leading 14 wins so far on the season. Kaeding comes to Las Cruces after winning the most recent NST race, the Sept. 26 Bob Kinser Fall Classic in Putnamville, Ind.

Danny Lasoski heads to Las Cruces with a 101-point lead over Kaeding's boss, Steve Kinser. Kaeding sits third in the standings, 155 points out of the lead.

Gates open at 5 p.m. on the 7th, with racing scheduled for around 7.

The night before, the Unser Racing Museum in Albuquerque, New Mexico will be hosting the National Sprint Tour Gala. The reception begins at 6 p.m. on Oct. 6 and goes until 11 p.m. There will be live and silent auctions to benefit the Unser Racing Museum College Fund.

NST drivers will be in attendance as well as Al Unser Sr. and Johnny Herrera. Herrera, Unser, Al Unser Jr., NST team owner Tony Stewart and the NST drivers have donated items for the auctions. Tickets are $50 and are available by calling 505-341-1776 or by e-mailing carla@unserracingmuseum.com.
