ASCS Rocky Mountain Region Finishes Season with Aztec Double
TULSA, Okla. (September 10, 2007) -- C.J. Johnson of Quinter, KS, had the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region championship in his sights when the 2007 season fired off back in May.
Now, with 15 nights of series action in the books, all that stands between Johnson and the ASCS Rocky Mountain Region championship is a two-night stand at Aztec Speedway in Aztec, NM, this Friday and Saturday, with both nights of action set to fire off at 7:00 p.m.
Entering the two-night event with an 82-point advantage over 2004 series champion Keith Rauch of Thornton, CO, Johnson can virtually seal the deal simply be making the feature starting grid on both nights.
As Johnson vies to become the seventh different ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion in as many years, 18-year-old Chad Corken of Highlands Ranch, CO, enters the Aztec double ranked third in points behind Johnson and Rauch, with Bob Schaeffer of New Castle, CO, and 17-year-old Ricky Montgomery of Lakewood, CO, rounding out the current top five.
The balance of the current top ten in ASCS Rocky Mountain Region points includes Mark Sweet (Rock Springs, WY), 2006 champion Patrick Bourke (Edwards, CO), 16-year-old Josh Flood (Arvada, CO), John Jacob (Aurora, CO) and 2001 champion Nick Haygood (Centennial, CO).
Albuquerque's Johnny Herrera swept last year's ASCS Rocky Mountain Region double at Aztec Speedway after splitting honors with Liberal, KS, racer Jason Martin in 2005.
The semi-banked, 1/3-mile Aztec Speedway clay oval is located in Aztec, NM, 1.2 miles south of US 550 on SR SR 544, then 0.2 miles east on Legion. For more information, contact the track at 505-334-2023.
The ASCS Rocky Mountain Region 2007 slate consists of 17 nights of action at eleven different tracks throughout Colorado, western Kansas, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska and South Dakota.
The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing for the American Sprint Car Series. With a dozen different Regions in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, ASCS will sanction approximately 240 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.
