Drivers and fans win big in Selinsgrove Opperman Memorial
Hodnett claims lion's share of event contingencies

5/6/03, Selinsgrove, PA - Over $3,200 in contingency monies and prizes were distributed to drivers and fans at Sunday night's 2nd Annual Jan Opperman Memorial at Selinsgrove Speedway as part of the 2003 Middleswarth Potato Chips Susquehanna Valley 410 Sprint Series.

The biggest portion of the contingencies for drivers was garnered by Greg Hodnett of Memphis, Tenn., who galloped to a convincing victory in the prestigious 30-lap contest, leading wire to wire for his fifth career win at the speedway.

All told, aboard his Bob Stewart owned No. 12 sprint car, Hodnett collected $3,000 for the win alone and then upped his payday to the tune of $3,754 by leading every circuit to collect $600 in lap monies. Additional extras collected by Hodnett included $77 for finishing second in his heat as well as in the dash.

Former Opperman car owners Luke Bogar and Al Hamilton posted the majority of the evening's extra dollars for drivers along with Opperman crewmember Phil Lash.

Bogar contributed $20 to lead a feature lap and $99 to set fast time, win the heats and the dash. Hamilton upped the ante by paying second place finishers in the heats and dash $77.

Other $99 heat winners included Len Thompson, Macungie; and Fred Rahmer, Salfordville. Chad Layton, Harrisburg, won the dash for $99 and Sean Michael, Allentown, had the $99 fast time of the night.

Those additional drivers collecting $77 for runner-up finishes were Jason Hagenbuch, Pottstown; and Keith Kauffman, Mifflintown.

Dustin Hoffman of Middleburg collected the $300 Lash Service Center Hard Charger award. Hoffman advanced from his 22nd starting spot to finish the feature 14th.

Lash also gave an extra $50 prize to finishers 21 -- 24, namely Kevin Frey, Mechanicsburg; Daryl Stimeling, Lewistown; Craig Keel, Weedsport, NY.; and Randy Baughman, Mechanicsburg.

The $500 Alexander Family Dealerships Perfect Performance Bonus was not claimed by Michael. In order to collect he would have had to advance from setting quick time to win his heat, the dash and the feature.

Donated by Hoosier Racing Tire, free right rear tires were won by 14th finisher Hoffman, 18th finisher Mark Smith, Newville; and 24th finisher Baughman.

Fans came away winners as well courtesy of Middleswarth Potato Chips.

The first 1,500 fans filing into the speedway received free bags of potato snacks and 24 of those fans later took home more chips.

Drawn from general admission ticket stubs, 24 fans received Middleswarth Tubs of chips with lucky numbers that corresponded to feature starting positions and drivers.

Willa Fry of Marysville came away the grand prize Middleswarth winner when her driver, Hodnett, claimed the feature event. Fry took home a huge Middleswarth prize package that included samples of every Middleswarth product as well as $200 in cash courtesy of the Middleburg based, Snyder County snack foods producer. Fry also took part in victory lane ceremonies.

The Middleswarth Potato Chips Susquehanna Valley 410 Sprint Series returns to Selinsgrove Speedway for round three of the five-date series for the Pennsylvania Speedweek finale on Sunday, July 6. The event is raindated for July 7.

Both Hodnett and round one winner Mark Smith will return to Selinsgrove in July in an effort to track down the $10,000 Middleswarth Chip Challenge. If one driver can win three of the five-dates he will take home the 10 G's and one lucky fan will pocket $500 on the night the feat is accomplished.

The series concludes with the Labor Day Classic on September 1 and the National Open on September 13.
