Spectacular start to the season at the "new" Skagit Speedway

ALGER, WA -- A huge opening night crowd enjoyed a great night of racing at the newly reconfigured 3/10ths oval of Skagit Speedway.

Sportsman driver Jimmy Deitz described the track as, "awesome." Richard Thornton, Seth Bergman, and Steve Parker took the checkered in the Sportsman sprint heat races.

Steve Parker led all 20 laps of the Sportsman A Main, followed closely by Ricky Smith, Lyle Woods, thirteenth starting Jimmy Deitz, and Richard Thornton. Incidentally, Smith began the race in last and finishing second gained the most passing points.

The crowd cheered loudly at the introduction of Mark Huson, a veteran driver who is back driving both a 360 and a 410. His 360 pulled in early with nose wing issues during his heat race, but managed to finish fifth in the A Main. Barry Martinez, Travis Jacobson, Ricky Fauver, and Alan Munn won their heat races in the 360 class.

In the 360 A Main, Barry Martinez took a wild ride in turn 2 and was done for the evening. Shawn Rice led most of the race until Fauver overtook him after a restart. Travis Jacobson brought out a red when his car overturned in turn 2. Fauver crossed under the flag stand first, followed by Rice, Brock Lemley, Andy Jacobson, and Huson.

The 410 A Main was shortened due to rain, but Travis Rutz redeemed his motor problems from his 360 heat race by finishing first. Huson was second, followed by Brad Pritchard, Kyle Johnson, and Martinez. Next week racing resumes at Skagit Speedway.
