JOHN CARROLL CLASSIC WINS FOR MARTINEZ, DEITZ,HUSON AND WALKER AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY
On Memorial Day Weekend each year Skagit Speedway holds the John Carroll Classic in memory of former racer Big John Carroll. The competition always brings out the best racing for a bigger purse and the prestige of being a Carroll Classic race night winner. On this race night the feature wins went to Barry Martinez in the Foley RV 410's, Marc Huson in the Budweiser 360's, Jimmy Deitz in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints and the first ever Carroll Classic Pioneer Ford Outlaw Hornet win went to Jody Walker.
For Martinez it was his third straight win in the Foley RV 410's. Martinez led all 25 laps of the 410 Main holding off the repeated charges of Brad Pritchard. Huson was third and Kyle Johnson and Josh Edson rounded out the top five. Picking off heat race wins were Roy Blumenhagen and Gary Vaughn. Picking up the Hard Charger award for the night was Martinez with 12 positions gained.
Marc Huson also led wire-to-wire in the 25-lap Budweiser 360 main event. It was a busy night for points leader Brandon Harkness as he finished second in the main and picked up the Hard Charger award with 11 positions gained on the racing evening. Third through fifth place was Bob Stevens, Travis Jacobson and Cory Chamberlain. Huson won his heat race and Rod Perkins won the other heat.
It took him five years to repeat the feat but Jimmy Deitz found victory circle again in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. Second place finisher Kelsey Carpenter repeatedly closed the gap in traffic, but Deitz held him off for the win. Deitz also climbed into a tie for the points lead with Steve Parker with the win and a heat race win. Parker won a heat as did rookie Colton Heath. Rookie Aaron Smith finished third in the main followed by Parker and Jared Alseth.
The Pioneer Ford Outlaw Hornets featured their largest field of the season, 20 cars. Jody Walker paced the field all night winning his heat and leading wire to wire in the 17 lap main event. The rest of the top five were Ed West, James Sims, Mike Powers and Monaco Garza. Walker also won his heat race and former winner Brett Lloyd was the other heat race winner.
Next race is Saturday night June 4th. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m..
