Cowtown Ready for ASCS Sooner Encore
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (September 20, 2004) - The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region returns to the high-banked quarter-mile Cowtown Speedway clay oval in Kennedale, TX, for an encore performance this Saturday night.
The series made its first stop at the racy oval on May 29 when Kevin Ramey and Danny Wood engaged in an epic battle before a packed house, with Ramey ultimately capturing his first victory of the season.
The defending series champion, Ramey has since added a win at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway to move into the series point lead. Hailing from Fort Worth, Ramey has also scored a pair of ASCS Gulf South wins, including one last Friday night at Waco's Heart O' Texas Speedway.
After leading the championship points chase much of the season, Oklahoma City's Andy Shouse enters Saturday night's Cowtown rumble just 16 points behind Ramey. Shouse was a Mother's Day Sooner Region winner at 81 Speedway in Wichita, KS. Shouse has just two events, including Saturday night, to deny Ramey his second consecutive series title.
Tulsa's Sean McClelland enters Saturday night's event ranked third, 66 points out of the lead. Just twelve markers behind McClelland is Liberal, KS, shoe Tony Bruce, Jr., who has accumulated 35 ASCS starts this season in a varied mix of National, Gulf South and Rocky Mountain Regional action while pursuing Sooner points.
Rookie contender Preston Peebles II of Lubbock, TX, enters Saturday night ranked fifth, just 20 points ahead of Collinsville, OK, driver Foster Landon. Completing the current top ten are 2001 series champion J.P. Bailey, rookie shoe Barry McCord, 2002 champion Danny Jennings and Gary Owens.
Danny Wood, a four-time Sooner Region feature winner this season, is also expected along with teammate Brian Harvill. 2004 Cowtown Speedway kingpin Claud Estes will lead a host of Cowtown regulars that will try to defend their home turf from the ASCS Sooner Region invaders.
Saturday night's Cowtown card gets under way at 7:00 p.m. Cowtown Speedway is located in Kennedale, TX, near Fort Worth, off I-20 Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Hwy., then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Road then east. For more information, contact the track at 817-478-9952 or 817-572-0848.
The 2004 American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region slate consists of 17 events at ten different tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Missouri.
