ASCS Southern Battle Moves Goes Atomic on Saturday

TULSA, Okla. (September 6, 2006) -- A torrid battle is brewing for the 2006 Heintz Performance American Sprint Car Series Southern Tour championship, with the lightning-fast, high-banked Atomic Motor Speedway in Oak Ridge, TN, set to host the series this Saturday night.

Entering the championship stretch drive with just seven nights of racing remaining, a mere eight points separates the top three in points as the series gears up for its first-ever Atomic run.

Last year's series runner-up, Coby Adams of Mooresville, NC, enters Saturday's card atop the point charts, holding just a five point lead over Cherryville, NC, racer Johnny Bridges. Just three more points back in third is fellow Cherryville shoe Lance Moss.

Butch Pendergrass of Pfafftown, NC, is currently ranked fourth, just 70 points off the lead pace and a dozen markers ahead of fifth-ranked Jeff Young of Mooresville, NC. The balance of the current top ten includes Brian Smith, Jimmy Burns, Kris Brooks, Doug Gold and Eddie Hamilton.

Thus far in 2006, eight different drivers have been victorious in ASCS Southern Tour competition, with only Johnny Bridges and Brian Smith posting multiple wins with two triumphs apiece. Smith topped the series most recent feature event at Oak Level Raceway in Martinsville, VA, on August 18.

Saturday's hot laps get under way at 6:00 p.m., with racing action to follow.

The high-banked, 1/3-mile Atomic Motor Speedway clay oval is located in Oak Ridge, TN, off I-40 Exit 364, then 0.5 mile north on US 321, then 0.7 mile west on Buttermilk Road. For more information, contact the track at 865-986-3589.

The Heintz Performance ASCS Southern Tour 2006 slate consists of 17 nights of racing at 14 different tracks throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and east Tennessee.

In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing at nearly 100 tracks throughout 27 different states and Canada in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
