Crawley Masters MMP COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek Run

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (July 16, 2004) - Tim Crawley overtook Eddie Gallagher on the 17th round en route to capturing his second victory in as many nights and third win through six rounds of the 12th Annual COMP Cams American Sprint Car Series Speedweek, foiling D.J. Masner's upset bid in Friday night's 30-lap feature at Memphis Motorsports Park.

The unheralded Masner closed to within three car-lengths as the leaders raced through heavy lapped traffic in the final rounds before Crawley slipped away to notch his 34th career O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers feature win.

While Crawley gridded the main event eighth, it was Garry Lee Maier and Gallagher who led the feature field to the green flag. Gallagher raced into the lead exiting turn two and paced the early rounds in front of Maier and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., with Crawley cracking the top five by the fourth lap.

Gallagher held a half straightaway lead as he encountered lapped traffic after seven rounds, with Crawley disposing of Stenhouse for third on the ninth circuit. With Gallagher's advantage reduced to just four car-lengths, Crawley raced past Maier for second on the 14th round then took command three laps later, moments before Stenhouse came to a halt in turn two with a flat right rear tire, bringing out the race's only caution.

Crawley led Gallagher on the restart, with tenth-starter Masner in third after overtaking Maier for the position just prior to the caution. Masner quickly moved past Gallagher into second and set his sights on Crawley, who had opened up a ten car-length advantage.

With lapped traffic a factor, Crawley jumped the cushion exiting turn four on the 26th lap, allowing Masner to close to within just three car-lengths. Crawley gathered it in however and blitzed through traffic to collect his 10th career ASCS Speedweek checkered flag aboard the Dynotech No. 87 Avenger.

Masner settled for the runner-up slot, with defending series champion Travis Rilat advancing three positions over the final ten rounds to finish third. Gallagher crossed the stripe fourth, with Maier rounding out the top five.

Gary Wright charged from 19th to sixth at the line, with Dale Howard, Mike Ward, Bryce Vowan and Marshall Skinner completing the top ten.

Rilat, Maier, Howard, Ward and Stull topped heat race action for the 39-car field, with Vowan and Skinner winning the twin 12-lap B Mains.

Terry Gray's evening came to an early end after an opening lap flip in turn two of the third heat race. The red flag also flew in the fifth heat race when Darren Stewart and Cody Branchcomb made contact in turn four, with Branchcomb tumbling into the catch fence. There were no injuries.
