Sprints on Dirt ready for opening night.

Morrice, MI: Entering their 24th season of sanctioning sprint car races, the Sprints On Dirt will head to Crystal Motor Speedway this Saturday night. Many SOD race teams are set to once again do battle on the 1/3 mile high-banked clay oval. High car counts seem to be the SOD tradition at Crystal, with an average count of 39 cars over the last three seasons for the opener. In 2003, Ron Flinn's Crystal Motor Speedway will be hosting a SOD event for the 24th year.

2002 SOD Champion Ronnie Beale will return to defend his title, and look for his first career victory at Crystal. However, many more teams are looking to dethrone the defending champ. 1999 SOD Champion Dain Naida will be driving the Kurt Lawicki owned #54 in hopes of grabbing his second championship. 19 year old Michigan hotshoe Dustin Daggett will also make a run for the title. Gregg Dalman from Grand Ledge, MI hopes for his best season. Seasoned veteran and former 360 Champion, Jerry Whitney from Fenton, MI will also make a run for the title. Jim Wohlfiel, who finished second in points last year, will return full time in 2003. Canadian invaders, Dean St. Denis and Mike Galadga will travel across the border for the 2003 opener, as well as the entire SOD season. Sprint car newcomers, Matt Kinzinger, and Jim McCarron look to make a run for the 2003 Rookie of the Year title.

Many more race teams will be in attendance this Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway. Look for race teams from five different states, and two different countries to be in attendance. SOD President Jason Fausey and staff look forward to starting the season at a track that many SOD teams call home. Pit gates open at 4:00, drivers meeting will be at 5:30, with sprint car hot laps to start at 6:15. Racing will begin at 7:30. Crystal Motor Speedway is located 1/4 mile East of Crystal, MI on Sydney Rd. Track phone is 989.235.5200, or you can visit their web site at www.crystalmotorspeedway.com.
