Hodnett Grabs SSP Victory on Thursday Night
NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (April 21, 2004) -- Greg Hodnett drew a front row starting spot for Thursday evening's Sprint Car feature at the Susquehanna Speedway Park, and never looked back, claiming his first win of the season. In the season's first Great American School Bus Race, J.R. Rodriguez claimed the win, while David Wilhelm made a spectacular drive from the rear of the field for the Xtreme Stock Car victory and claimed the double money bonus.
Hodnett started alongside polesitter Brian Leppo in the 25-lap Sprint Car feature, and outgunned Leppo to take the lead on the first lap. He led all the way to score the $2,500 victory, his seventh career SSP win. While Hodnett was maintaining a secure lead, and all out war erupted for the second spot between Lance Dewease, Fred Rahmer and Jeff Shepard. All three drivers held the second spot at one time, but it was Dewease who claimed the spot at the end over Rahmer and Shepard. Leppo finished fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Josh Wells, Blane Heimbach, Eric Stambaugh, Cory Haas, and last week's feature winner Jason Johnson. Heats went to Heimbach and Leppo.
J.R. Rodriguez vaulted from the fifth starting spot into the lead on the first lap of the 10 lap Great American School Bus Race, and then held off a last lap challenge from Alan Witmer to score the win. Following the top two were Rob Harkins, John Hiden Sr., and Paul Fisher. Heats went to Shawn Arndt and Harkins.
Wilhelm started 32nd in the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature and took the lead from Mike Goodwin on the 18th lap. Wilhelm also won the Pepsi Dash. Following Wilhelm in the feature event were Mark Vegh, Mike Mixell, Adam Smith and Travis Horan. Heat wins went to Tom Johns and Smoke Christine.
