4/3/04, Selinsgrove, PA -- The next date of the Susquehanna Valley 410 Sprint Series at Selinsgrove Speedway comes is Sunday, May 2 when the Middleswarth Potato Chips 3rd Annual Jan Opperman Memorial takes center stage. Darren Eash of Ijamsville, Md., won the series opener on March 26.
Based in Middleburg, Middleswarth Potato Chips will giveaway free bags of potato chips to the first 1,000 fans passing through the gates which will open at 4 PM for the Opperman Memorial. Middleswarth pilot Todd Hestor won the inaugural Opperman Memorial in 2002 drving the No. 7M.
Meant to honor the 1973 track champion who is renown for helping establish Central Pennsylvania as the nation's hotbed for sprint car racing, the early May, 30-lap event will again find famous Opperman car owner Luke "Dick" Bogar Jr. of Selinsgrove returning to the sport. Bogar will partner with another Opperman owner, Al Hamilton of Manheim in supporting the event. Both Bogar and Hamilton have supported the race since it's inception.
Bogar, 76 of Selinsgrove and owner of Opperman's famed No. 99, which he drove to a track title in 1973, will sweeten the pot for the drivers for the evening along with Hamilton.
The night's fast timer along with the heat winners and the dash victor will each receive $99.00 in remembrance of the Bogar 99 driven by Opperman. In addition, Bogar will post $99 bonuses for the leaders of laps nine and 18 as well as for the ninth and 18th place finishers in the 30-lap memorial.
At times between 1974 and '76, Opperman's talents were found behind the wheel of the Al Hamilton owned No. 77 which today is driven by Lance Dewease who claimed the 2002 series title. Courtesy of Al Hamilton and Hamilton Management, second place finishers in each of the heats as well as the dash will receive $77.00. Hamilton will afford bonuses of $77 to the leaders of laps seven and 14 as well as to the seventh and 14th place finishers in the feature. The Hamilton No. 77 driven by Dewease of Fayetteville will also be on display May 2.
The half-mile Snyder County oval holds the distinction of being the only facility where Opperman ever garnered a track championship before moving on to efforts in USAC and in the Indianapolis 500 in 1974 and '76.
The May 2 Opperman Memorial, which includes the pro stocks and carries a raindate of June 6, will be part of a blockbuster weekend at Selinsgrove. The speedway will host its 4th Annual Pack The Track Night on May 1, featuring free general admission to fans.
