Concord, N.C. - Kenny Adams fought his way around Concord Motorsport Park's bullet fast and tricky 1/2 mile asphalt tri-oval Saturday night to lead the last 15 laps of the United Sprint Car Series 35 lap main event over USCS rising star Chris Rogers and Indy Racing League regular, Jimmy Kite, to pick up the $2000 paycheck in the "Outlaw Thunder" Tour 2001 season and Asphalt series opener.
Adams really had to work for his 24th career USCS win as, he didn't get off to the start he wanted by finishing third in heat # 3, thereby giving him a mid-pack, ninth place starting position in the A main event and leaving him out of the inaugural Airflow Research (cylinder heads) Power Dash presented by Benning Construction Company and paying $250 to the winner of the 6 car/6 lap dash.
The field of 26 cars from six states was filled with talent ready to challenge the defending champion includin,g not only Rogers and Kite, but, Adams teamate 1997 USCS champ, Red Stauffer, 1999 USCS Dirt National champion, Marshall Skinner, asphalt rival Jim Raptis, 7 time National sprint champion, Terry Gray and even included past Concord Motorsport Park late model track champion, Lance Moss who was turning the fastest practice times of all and a host of others.
Adams started in his assigned ninth position and watched thru the early stages of the race as first his teammate Stauffer took the point and led until lap four, when 1999 top rookie, 20 year old Chris Rogers of Winston, Georgia, sped by Stauffer to take the lead and started to race away from the field, while looking to be picking up his first ever USCS victory. Somewhere between lap 5 and 20 , Rogers tapped the wall and bent his Jacob's ladder (sway device) and changed the cars handling. But during Roger's charge out front, Adams was working his way past the other front runners, finally passing Kite for second on lap 16. It took four more laps to catch Rogers, who seemed to be slowing only slightly from the early torrid pace, but Adams, who seemed to have plenty of tires and energy left at the grueling track just kept going faster and pasted Rogers on lap 20 and started began to pull away for a comfortable win.
Third year sprint car racer, Rogers made a tremendous move in lapped traffic to wipe a closing Jimmy Kite off his tail and finished 6-8 car lengths ahead of Kite for second place and a very impressive race. Stauffer finished in fourth followed by Jim Raptis in 5th, 1999 Asphalt top rookie, Ted Williams was 6th , Randy Helton 7th, Marshall Skinner, 8th, 1st sprint car race "Rookie" Aubrey Black of Lookout Mountain, Georgia, finished impressively in 9th and Bill Moore rounded out the top 10.
Heat races were won by USCS Jim Raptis, late model veteran/sprint car rookie, Lance Moss who was a fan favorite, and IRL racer Jimmy Kite.
Stauffer won the first ever Airflow Research Power Dash and picked up the points lead for the season's end 10 car / 10 lap $5000 ($10,000 POSSIBLE) to win Airflow Research "Super Power" DASH. Chris Rogers applied the heat to race home second in this one and recieved $100 for his efforts.
Kenny Adams was the Huggins Cams "Hard Charger" for passing 8 cars in route to victory. Aubrey Black received the All Star Motorsports / Hart Racing "Rookie of the Race" award.
The Weld top 10 award went to Bill Moore and C&R Racing Radiator's I'm Cool awards went to Randy Helton and Brian Thomas. Kinser Filters "Clean Air" award went to Marshall Skinner and Ted Williams received the Sierra Racing Products "Power Brakes" award.
The evenings KSE Racing Products "Steering and Stompin" award went to Chris Rogers for his spectacular passing efforts that netted him second place in his heat race, the Power Dash and a runnerup feature finish.
Rookie Chris Hall, the "Quick Brit", got his first USCS win in the exciting 12 lap B-Main event that included 7 rookies and was one of the evenings most exciting races and went caution free as the impressive group of first year sprint car drivers showed "as much poise as I could ever have imaged" stated USCS President , Pete Walton. Hall, who is a sports car driving school instructer at Panoz Racing's Road Atlanta, looked great in his 3rd time ever sprint car start as the London , England transplant living in Demorest, Ga. took tthe lead from Salisbury, N.C. 18 year old , Ben Basingeron lap 4 to lead the rest of the way. "I guess, the rookies really did listen very well in the "Rookie Orientation" meeting. I was totally impressed with the way they handled this really tricky place. I'm not sure if I could have done this as a rookie. I was totally impressed with these drivers and all my prayers were answered, also," concluded Walton.
