MARTIN HAMMERS TO FIRST O'REILLY USCS ASPHALT WIN IN CORDELE, GA

CORDELE. GA - Danny "The Hammer" Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL picked up his first O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series win of the 2005 season Saturday night at Watermelon Capital Speedway driving the Martin Structures, Inc. Shaw/ZRE. The 19-year-old driver took the lead on lap four and never looked back to post his first career Asphalt Thunder Tour victory.

Martin's first asphalt win adds to his O'Reilly USCS career win total of seven victories since 2003. In a caution-free 40-lap feature race, Martin lapped all but the top five cars, and he could see them directly in front of him when he took the checkered flag. Martin was also the SpeedMart Young Gun of the Race, and picked up the Outlaw Brakes Fast Brake of the Race Award.

The defending and four-time O'Reilly USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN finished second in the Goodson Farms/Wendy's Maxim/Wesmar. The K&N Filters third spot went to Wayne Reutimann Sr. of Zephyrhills, FL in the Case Contracting/Revere GMC Hurricane/Snyder.

K&N Pole Award winner Ryan Myers of Eldorado, OH finished in the ButlerBuilt fourth position driving the Garrett Farms Domelt/Garrett-Myers, after leading the first three laps of the race. In qualifications, the 18-year-old driver set a new track record, touring the 4/10-mile paved oval in 13.330 seconds for an average speed of 108.027 miles per hour.

Wayne Reutimann Jr. of Zephyrhills, FL drove the Case Contracting/Revere GMC to the fifth spot to earn the SpeedMart Top Five Award. Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL finished in the Air Flow Research sixth position driving the Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott.

Aubrey Black of Lookout Mountain, GA started 14th and finished in the FSR seventh position, and earned the Huggins Cams Hard Charger of the Race Award driving the Crunch Time Express Shaw/Slobuilt. R.J. Johnson of Decatur, TN picked up the Simpson Safety Products eighth place driving the Tinsley Engineering J&J/ZRE.

Ninth went to Michael Miller of Tallapoosa, GA in the K&S Auto Sales Eagle/Gaerte, and Brian Thomas of Auburn, GA rounded out the top ten in the Saligoe Metal Works Saligoe/Broome Performance to earn the Air Flow Research Tenth-Place Award.

Bryn Gohn of Malabar, FL finished 11th in the Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott, and the 19-year-old driver was the Robison Racing Products Rookie of the Race. Tom Winegardner Jr. of Pierson, FL finished 13th in the Snap-On Tools J&J/WRP to earn the FSR Performance Award.

Myers took the lead from the pole position at the start of the race, but Martin put the pressure on, and took the lead on lap four. Gray got by Myers for the second spot on lap nine, but Martin had already begun to pull away. The best battle on the race track during the first half of the race was a Reutimann father and son duel for the fourth spot.

Reutimann Jr. held off Reutimann Sr. for the first 19 laps of the race, but Dad made the pass for fourth on lap 20, and then went after Myers in the third position. Reutimann passed Myers for the third spot on lap 30, with the second-running Gray in his sights.

In the meantime, Martin had packed his bags, turned in the key, and checked out on the field. When Gray, Reutimann Sr., Myers, and Reutimann Jr., running second through fifth respectively, were going into turn one after taking the white flag, Martin was coming off turn four with the checkered flag in sight.

Gray won the six-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash, and Brice Wrenn of Lexington, SC drove his Stainless Fabricators ERI-Raptis/Gaerte to victories in the six-lap Koolbeans Trophy Dash, and the ten-lap Engler Machine and Tool First Heat Race. Adams won the ten-lap ButlerBuilt Second heat Race.

In the five O'Reilly USCS races held on Saturday night, there was only one caution flag all evening, when Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL had a mechanical failure in the second heat and stalled on the front straightaway. The 16-year-old Rookie of the Year candidate had to scratch for the night, and earned the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award.

Gray is still on top of the O'Reilly USCS National point standings, stretching his lead over Adams to 12 points. Reutimann Jr. still leads the O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour points, but Myers has closed to within four points.

The next national event for the O'Reilly USCS will be on May 14 at Cherokee Super Speedway ½-mile clay oval in Gaffney, SC. The race will also award O'Reilly USCS Carolina Thunder Tour points. The next O'Reilly USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour event will be on June 16 at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC.
