USCS opens season at Lanier National Saturday, March 15

Braselton, GA - The United Sprint Car Series which holds the distinction as the World's only winged outlaw sprint car series that races on both pavement and dirt ovals holds it's season opener at Lanier National Speedway this Saturday night March the 15th. The event is also the official opener of the USCS pavement series known as the American Racer USCS "Outlaw Thunder" Tour. The event will bring a contingent of drivers from nine or more states to the 3/8 mile paved oval located on Georgia Highway 53 in Braselton, Georgia. USCS founder and President, Pete Walton, said," Lanier National Speedway is well known to be one of the finest if not "the" finest short track facilities in the country and is one of the USCS competitors very favorites. These short wheel based 700 Horsepower winged outlaw sprint cars really are a perfect match with Lanier's size shape, banking and racing surface and some of our best races each season are at Lanier", stated the USCS President.

The USCS contingent will be lead by three drivers who have achieved success at Lanier. The trio includes 1) 2002 USCS National Champion Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee, who won here on April 27th 2002. 2) last year's Labor Day weekend winner 25 year old, Wayne Reutimann, Jr. from Zephyrhills, Florida who finished in second place in the Asphalt Series standings to Gray. 3) Track record holder Kenny Adams from Malabar, Florida. Adams who has won four USCS features at Lanier set a new track record in 2001 of 11.32 seconds or nearly 130 m.p.h.

This trio will have plenty of competition from others who want to grab the limelight from them including a growing group of local Atlanta metro area talent led by tough pavement racer, Jim Raptis, from Marietta who crossed the finish line in third place in USCS' last event at Lanier, but, looks to move up two spots this time around.

Others include Randy Helton from Palmetto, Georgia in a new asphalt mount engineered by Raptis' ERI (Engine Research,Inc.) Joining them will be 2002 USCS top rookie, Randy Weaver from Powder Springs and always tough, Chris Rogers from Winston, Georgia who finished in third place nationally in 2002 in a new specially designed pavement Hurricane Chassis sprint car . Local area entries also include 1999 USCS asphalt top rookie Ted Williams from Atlanta, Jim MacKenzie, from nearby Buford and Anthony Nave from Morrow. Other expected local entries are Doug Day from Winder who finished in second place in the national standings to Gray in 2002, well known stock car racer turned sprint car racer, Jerry Aubrey, also from Winder, and Brian Thomas from Auburn Georgia. Chris Hall "the Quick Brit from Demorest is expected as well.

Out of town challengers will be plentiful as well and include USCS regulars Aubrey Black from Lookout Mountain, Georgia and second year driver Doug Fitzwater from Birmingham, Alabama. Both finished in the top ten USCS 2002 point standings and Fitzwater did well as a rookie in 2002. Veteran USCS regular Chris Hill from Newell, Alabama returns with a new motor program and expects to be competitive all year. USCS veteran Dave Thorman from Greenville, South Carolina is entered as is teamate Jimmy Taylor from Mauldin, South Carolina and second year driver Will Ragsdale from Easley, South Carolina will travel down with them. North Carolina will furnish Florida transplant Brad Davis, now from Moorseville, North Carolina. Davis is always a top five contender and moving up with a bullet.

The list doesn't end here as Erin Crocker one of the top drivers with the New York state based Empire Super Sprints will start here third season in sprint cars by making her asphalt driving debut at Lanier National Speedway before moving on to Phoenix, Arizona for the 100 mile Copper World Classic in a USAC sanctioned Silver Crown championship car race on the one mile paved oval at Phoenix International Raceway on the following weekend. Crocker was named 360 wild card performance driver of the year in 2002 by the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame for her outstanding season when she joined a short list of women sprint car drivers who have won features when she had four feature wins in the tough ESS.

Kevin Feeney, a top asphalt sprint car racer from the state of Michigan is entered and plans to make the 10 hour trip only to take the first place money. Feeney holds the half mile world record at Salem Speedway in Indiana. Race info and ticket info can be obtained by calling the track at 770-967-8600.
