Buckeye Brecht Wins USCS Volusia Showdown at Sundown
BARBERVILLE, FL - Mike Brecht of Deshler, OH won the United Sprint Car Series "Showdown At Sundown" Sunday at Volusia Speedway Park. Brecht drove the Tim Hogan's Carpet Maxim/Hampshire to hold off early challenges from Brice Wrenn of Lexington, SC and a late rally by Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN to lead all 30 laps for the victory.
Four-time and 2004 USCS National Champion Gray finished second in the Goodson Farms/Wendy's Maxim/Wesmar. Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL took the third spot in the Martin Structures, Inc. Schnee/ZRE, and Wrenn was fourth in the Stainless Fabricators Hench/Gaerte.
The fifth spot went to Daryl Smith of Riverview, FL, who started 19th in the Buddy's Home Furnishings Beaberbuilt/Gaerte, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of Olive Branch, MS came back from a lap 17 mishap to finish sixth in the Country Ford/South Tire J&J/Dynotech. Doug Day of Winder, GA was seventh in the Gotta Race Eagle/Dingler.
R.J. Johnson of Decatur, TN was the Rookie of the Race with an eighth-place effort in the Leaf Race Wear/Pin Rings J&J/ZRE, and ninth went to Bruce Durden of Jacksonville, FL in the Durden Surveying & Mapping Avenger/Ott after starting 24th. Durden was the Huggins Race Cams Hard Charger of the Race. Stephen Darvalics of Venice, FL rounded out the top ten in the CineMoves Clincher/Gaerte.
Brecht took the lead at the drop of the green flag from the pole position, as outside front row starter Wrenn got a run on him going into turn one. Several cars tangled on the frontstretch and on into turn one to bring out the caution flag, necessitating a complete restart. On the restart, Brecht took the lead, but Wrenn was all over his rear nerf bar.
Brecht was able to pull away to a six-car length lead, but once he faced lapped traffic, Wrenn was once right on his tail. Behind the two frontrunners, Gray, Stenhouse, Martin, Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL and Greg Leonard of Tampa, FL ran third through seventh respectively and battling for position.
Martin was able to pass Stenhouse for the fourth spot on lap 13, and Adams moved by Stenhouse one lap later for the fifth position. The five-car battle turned into a full-blown war on lap 17 when Adams and Leonard got together, collecting Stenhouse in turn one. Adams' Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott flipped. The 2000 USCS National Champion and defending race winner was O.K., but his race was done for the night.
Stenhouse changed a cut tire and got back out for the restart, but Leonard spent two laps in the pits repairing wing damage on his Snap On Tools/WRP J&J/Hampshire. Leonard ended up 14th at the finish and earned the FSR Performance Award.
Brecht led Wrenn, Gray, Martin, and Smith down for the restart. Gray picked up the pace and began to challenge Wrenn for the second position. Gray made the pass for second on lap 24, and then took off after Brecht, who had opened up a half straightaway lead. Stenhouse, in the meantime, was blasting up through the field, and was quickly back in the top ten by lap 20.
Martin was able to pass Wrenn for the third spot on lap 25, but Gray was gone and closing fast on Brecht. As the laps wound down, Gray closed to within four car-lengths, but could not challenge Brecht for the lead.
Heat race victories went to 1997 USCS National Champion Red Stauffer of Winter Park, FL in the C&B Mushrooms Shaw/Ott, Leonard, and Darvalics. Neil LaRose of Safety Harbor, FL was the apparent winner of the second eight-lap heat race, and while celebrating the first race he had ever won; he forgot to go to the scales for the post-race weigh-in and was disqualified.
The hardest crash of the weekend occurred in the third heat race when something broke on Chad Allum's race car in turn three, sending the Heintz Automotive Allum/Allum over the guardrail, and flipping end-over-end several times through the trees and out of sight into a 15-foot ravine.
USCS officials and track safety workers rushed to the scene, found the race car, but the driver was missing. While officials searched the deep ravine, Allum had already exited his car, crawled to the top of the ravine, and came through the woods to wave to the crowd that he was O.K. The wild ride earned Allum the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award.
The night before, Terry Witherspoon of Jacksonville, FL flipped end-over-end and out of track exiting turn two. He was uninjured in the crash.
The next pair of events for USCS will be at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL on November 5-6 with a complete racing program each night.
