RED HOT GREG HODNETT GETS FIRST GROVE WIN SPORTSMAN TO SMITH
MECHANICSBURG PA -- Greg Hodnett left little doubt that he is the hottest sprint car driver in the country when he dominated a strong field and won the 25-lap sprint car feature Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
Hodnett started twelfth in the Apple Chevrolet #12 and charged into the top five on the second lap. As Todd Gracey set the pace Hodnett moved into second place on lap eight. The overhauled Gracey with a slide job through turn two and never looked back.
Before a caution flag closed the field with three laps remaining Hodnett was a half lap ahead of the field.
It was the first win ever at Williams Grove for Hodnett, who became the 13th different driver to win a sprint car feature at the Grove this year. He earned $3000 for his performance.
In victory lane the Memphis resident and ex outlaw accepted an invitation to become an official representative of the mythical Pennsylvania Posse. Hodnett also dispelled all rumors by announcing that he will be in the Apple Chevrolet car for the National Open on October 2-3.
Fred Rahmer charged from eleventh starting position to second at the finish and increased his Cindy Rowe Auto Glass point lead.
Cris Eash finished a strong third and Sean Michael made a late charge to claim fourth, Kevin Gobrecht completed the top five ahead of Don Kreitz, Jesse Wentz, Steve Seigel, Len Thompson and P.J. Chesson. Heats for the 32 sprint cars went to Rahmer, Chesson and Hodnett. Shawn Keen won the consolation race.
In the companion super sportsman feature Mark Smith continued his recent domination of the division with his second straight win at the Grove.
Smith started 13th and took the lead from Paul Troutman on the 12th lap of the 20-lap event. Troutman settled for second ahead of Donnie Beaver, Dave Berkheimer and J. R Fry.
Sportsman heats went to Frankie Herr, Howie Locke, Keith Prutzman and Smith. Bob Fannasy and Russ Mitten won the consolation races.
The sprint cars will be joined by the 358's on September 25.
