MECHANICSBURG, PA., 6/2/00 - It was only fitting that it came down to two veteran racers side-by-side to determine who would tie Lynn Paxton's Williams Grove Speedway all-time win mark Friday night. "There was a little bit of contact, but, you're racing to win on the last lap," was the understatement of the night by the winner in victory lane. Mifflintown's Keith Kauffman and Sinking Spring's Donnie Kreitz Jr. battled wheel-to-wheel through the final turns and bumped coming to the checkered with Kauffman picking up the win by less than a car-length for his record-tying 43rd win at the historic Mechanicsburg half-mile. Kauffman had opened up a three second lead over Kreitz with five laps to go in the 25 lap feature, and watched his lead dwindle as he battled with a lapped traffic. Then Kreitz, who drove his car faster and faster as the laps wound down, stood the grandstand crowd on it's feet as he literally went wheel-to-wheel with Kauffman for the win because he too could have tied the all-time win mark if he could have won. In the end it was the Mifflintown speedster standing proud in victory lane becoming the ninth different winner in 14 races at the Grove. "I was following that lapped car and he was kicking off a lot of dust where I was running at so it was a little hard getting off the corner," said Kauffman on the final laps. "I figured somebody would be coming...I was running around the top and I know the bottom was getting quicker as the top was getting too far up and I know when you're leading like that you don't know who's coming." "I seen the blue car (Kreitz) and I said ‘Uh-oh, here he comes. He let her go and so I let her go then too." Kauffman added with his customary laugh afterwards. Polesitter Jimmy McBee grabbed the lead at the drop of the green with sixth-starting Kauffman driving hard into second by the end of the first lap. But Kauffman was not to be denied this night as he drove around McBee in the third and fourth turns following a sixth-lap caution restart. From there Kauffman drove out in front and opened up a comfortable 3.41 second lead over Brook Weibley by the 15th lap. But Kreitz, who started ninth, was just waiting for his car to hook up and on the 17th lap passed Weibley for the runner-up spot as Kauffman tried to stretch his lead. Kreitz made his charge on the final lap and drove to the bottom of the track in the final turns and slid up as Kauffman turned down hard at the exit of the final turn to set up the side-by-side wheel-banging ending to his fourth overall win this season. Kreitz settled for second, with Lance Dewease coming from his distant 19th starting spot to finish third, Len Thompson fourth, and Dave Ely fifth. Completing the top-10 was Shawn Keen, Skip Jackson, Brook Weibley, Todd Shaffer and Sean Michael. Heats for the 29 super sprinters on hand were won by Fred Rahmer, Jimmy McBee, and Len Thompson, with Lance Dewease winning the consolation.

East Berlin's Eric Stambaugh held off both Rich Eichelberger and Darren Eash in a wild three-wide race for the lead in the final turns to pick up his first 358 sprint win of the season in there 20-lap feature. Eichelberger and Eash finished second and third respectively with Dan Dietrich and Jake Raudabaugh completing the top-five. Rounding out the top-10 was Tim Hershey, Billy Dietrich, Chad Layton, Danny Jones, and Mark Yinger. Heats for the 43 limited sprinters on hand were won by Joe Ilg, Jake Raudabaugh, Doug Esh, and Eric Stambaugh. Winning twin consolation events was Billy Albright and Denny Garl.
