STOOPS FREIGHTLINER SPRINT CAR SERIES Steele Completes "Cycle" With Winchester "Oldtimers" Victory Jasper Engines & Transmissions Classic at IRP Wednesday Night
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. completed the "cycle" Saturday night at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway, taking the 26th "Winchester Oldtimers Weekend" Stoops Freightliner/USAC Sprint Car 30-lap feature at the 1/2-mile paved oval. That made him the first driver in 1998 USAC National competition to win a Silver Crown, Sprint Car and Midget race.
Steele previously won the Silver Crown race at Memphis, Tenn. June 7 and the "Night Before the 500" Midget race at Indianapolis Raceway Park May 24.
Steele caught Jason McCord on the sixth lap at Winchester and led the rest of the way in the Aristocrat Products/Wynn's Special to beat Tracy Hines, Brad Armstrong, Eric Gordon and McCord to the checkered flag. Steele was also the Turbines, Inc. fastest qualifier and won his heat race. Other heats went to Gordon and McCord and Pat Abold won the True Value semi.
Series point leader Kevin Thomas finished last in the feature field but retains a 92-point lead over Tony Elliott (seventh at Winchester) going into this Wednesday night's nationally televised (ESPN2, live) Jasper Engines & Transmissions Sprint Classic at IRP. Practice at IRP starts at 6 p.m., qualifying gets under way at 7 and the first race is at 8. A 30-lap feature is scheduled.
Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Point Standings: 1-Kevin Thomas-912; 2-Tony Elliott-820; 3-Brian Tyler-813; 4-Tim Cox-771; 5-Derek Davidson-757; 6-Jason McCord-701; 7-J.J. Yeley-671; 8-Brad Armstrong-645; 9-Dave Steele-573; 10-Kevin Doty-573.
