CDR shows pace in opener

The two Craft Disbury Racing drivers, USA sensation Jason Johnson and Brad "Hollywood" Heywood both showed good pace in the opening round of the World Series Sprintcars Championship at Brisbane International Speedway.

Johnson was the first car on the greasy circuit during qualifying to put in a creditable time of 13.549 second around the tight bullring to be seventh at the completion of qualifying. Qualifying later in the session Heywood was circulated a smooth two laps to be eighth fastest.

After the heat races Johnson was the fifth highest point scorer but when the top points man, drew an inversion of three it put the Aussiefast Transport/STP pilot on pole position for dash one. Following a start where he was deemed to have jumped the start Johnson came together with Stephen Bell who was on his outside. The contact sent the 27-year-old American skyward and landing on top of the concrete barrier.

Such of the impact that it bent the front of the Eagle chassis and destroyed the front end.

Starting from fourth in the second dash Heywood moved forward to cross the line second.

After some hasty repairs by the entire Craft Disbury Racing team Johnson was able to face the starter in the A-Main to gain valuable points towards the Championship. During the opening laps of the 30-lap journey both Heywood and Johnson passed several cars to be placed in third and seventh respectively.

On lap 16 Heywood spun out of contention throughout turn 3 and 4 in spectacular fashion. He was therefore relegated to the back of the pack. After a red light stoppage and another caution period had another car make contact with the inside of his car forcing him into the concrete wall and bringing him to a halt.

When officials declared the race due the curfew at the venue one lap later Heywood was classed as 14th and Johnson 17th.

The Aussiefast Transport/STP drivers with both be back in action next weekend at Wagga Speedway for the second round of the World Series Sprintcars Championship.

WHAT THE DRIVER'S SAID

JASON JOHNSON

"Racing is full of ups and downs. I was very surprised by my qualifying effort on what was a very greasy surface and the race track is like nothing I have ever seen before.

During the heat races the car felt really comfortable to drive but the track was very narrow and hard to pass on. Unfortunately though it all turned pear shape at the start of the dash.

The crew done a great job to get me on the track for the feature. The chassis was bent at the front and I must say it was a challenge to drive in the feature it was just like driving a Toyota Corona. It was a very disappointing way to end the weekend, but we will be back ready for next weekend."

BRAD HEYWOOD

"It was a case of if, but, maybe.

The car felt OK during the heat races and really good in the dash to start from the second row of the feature. Unfortunately I endured a throttle problem that started from lap one of the feature where it was either on or off, there was no in between.

I almost caught the spin and only lost one spot but when the car got up on it’s back wheels I had to get out of the throttle and that put me to the back of the pack.

While the end result was disappointing the fact that we both showed good pace i think is very pleasing."
