Johnson leaps to second in World Series Championship
American Sensation, Jason Johnson has been closing in on the leading duo in the World Series Championship over the previous few rounds. Tonight he cracked the barrier and moved into second spot in the Championship with a fine fourth placing at Brisbane International Speedway in Queensland.
While Johnson was gaining valuable points towards the Championship chase his Aussiefast Transport/STP teammate, Brad Heywood was having a troublesome night. The 46-year-old qualified nineteenth fastest in the thirty-six car strong field that included no less than six American stars.
In his opening heat race Heywood suffered an engine problem that forced him not to finish his and miss his second heat while Paul Knott and the team repaired his PK Automotive power plant.
The lack of qualifying heat points forced Heywood into the C-Main that he went on to win in stylish fashion. Unfortunately his run ended in the B-Main when a car spun in front of him while Heywood was moving through the pack.
Johnson also endured problems in his opening heat race when contact with another car caused damage to the Greber Racing Components in the front end. After some hasty repairs by the Craft Disbury Racing team using their Beta tools Johnson went on to record a third place finish.
The 26-year-old American moved up a spot in the dash to start the 40-lap A Main from the outside of the third row.
During the opening laps of the event Johnson battled with a "tight" racecar and dropped down the order to be in eighth spot when a car spun in turn three on the fourth occasion. As the race wore on the car set up came on better and he set about chasing down the leaders.
Just over half race distance Johnson had elevated himself to fifth spot and was within striking distance of the leading quartet. He then moved into fourth when one of the leaders came together with a lapped car.
As the race continued Johnson's car began to "loosen up" costing him speed exiting the turns. Crossing the line in fourth elevated Johnson into second place in the Championship standings.
Daryn Pittman won the round ahead of Shane Stewart and Brent Kaeding.
