Tough night at the World Series office for Johnson and Heywood

For the second time in a matter of four days the Craft Disbury Racing team ventured to Brisbane International Speedway tonight for a round of the World Series Sprintcar Championship.

For the first time in the Championship Brad Heywood out qualified his American team mate when the former World Series Champion set the 11th fastest qualifying time in the 35-car strong field. Johnson set the 15th fastest qualifying time.

With the pair of Aussiefast Transport/STP Eagles starting along side of each other in their opening heat. Disaster struck for Heywood in the opening turn when two cars got together in front of him leaving him no where to go but t-boning the stranded Mike Van Bremen machine. The impact tore the front end out of Heywood's car while Van Bremen was taken to hospital for observation.

Johnson went on to record a third placed finish with a car that was handling no where near perfect.

While Heywood's crew replaced the front end with literally seconds to spare before his next heat race Johnson's men worked furiously to find a perfect set up.

In their second heat race Johnson crossed the line in fifth and Heywood suffered a broken shock absorber finishing ninth.

On a one lane race track Heywood moved forward several spots in the opening laps of B-Main but was unable to finish in a position to elevate him into the A-Main event.

Starting from the twelfth position in the 30-lap A-Main event Johnson slotted into tenth position during the opening laps of the event. When the series leader, Max Dumesny lost a wheel on lap 3 it elevated the American into ninth and shortly after into eighth when another of the front runners suffered a flat tyre.

At half race distance Johnson was passed for eighth but continued to battle and look for every passing opportunity to elevate himself up the order.

It was all to no avail however with passing opportunities limited and Johnson crossed the line in ninth spot.

American Shane Stewart won his first round of the Championship ahead of Brooke Tatnell who made a last lap pass for second on Cameron Gessner.

The next round of the World Series Sprintcar Championship will be held at Wagga International Raceway next Wednesday 14th of January.

WHAT THE DRIVER'S SAID

JASON JOHNSON

"We struggled all night for some reason.

Managed to salvage a top 10 that was good. We along with others struggled with set up all night. Tomorrow is another day and there is still three rounds to go in the Championship.

We have struggled at this track for some reason but now we go to Wagga which people tell me should suit me and the final two rounds are in Adelaide where we have been fast all year."

BRAD HEYWOOD

"If I could just have some luck one of these nights it would be good. This is the third time in the Championship that I have been in the wrong place at the wrong time in the opening turn of heat one.

My guys worked superbly between the heat races to get me into the second heat race we literally had seconds to spare.

The competition is that tough though you can't afford to miss a heat race and then on a surface like the one tonight it is very hard to pass from that deep in the B-Main."
